Why bother with a datajack? Why not use one of the sensor nets (described in
SR2 as the way of cowards), and save your essence? It serves the same purpose,
and you don't have to cut into your head (major invasive surgery, if I remember
correctly, with the possibility of even more essence lost) to make it work.

First of all I would like to say that the datajack was not the only
piece of cyberware installed.
Waif was a burned out Sorcerer adept who lived out of coffin motels.
He had cybereyes, datajack, smart link, and wired reflexes 2. His
datajack was for phone calls and reading/writing in his pocket secretary
and magical libraries.
Tempest (who I played three weeks until that game fizzled out, so
this is all memory) was a combat mage with smart link, cybereyes,
datajack, and fingertip compartment with monofilament whip and
electromagnet tip. (He had metal pads with an adhesive on the back so he
could have the option of creating a trip wire. He came from a military
background so the datajack was more of standard issue.
It's also somewhat of one of my personal unwritten cyberpunk rules.
If you go under the knife you get a datajack. It would take a special
background to be otherwise.
"We have installed a cerebral bomb to assure you follow through with
our agreement, Shadowrunnner X. We also installed a datajack while we
were at it."

Ancient cultures believed that names held great power, personal names
more so and they were guarded very closely. To protect themselves, they
answered to another name, because if another discovered their real name,
it could be used against them.
History repeats itself.

To collect information only? Sure... but they're unwieldy, unsightly, and
a pain to install under fire.

Another thing. If you're using Matrix rules, a net should be even slower
than the basic datajack. I would say... DFR of 5, and good luck.

True, but the impression I got from that was that he just had a datajack so he
could get information

If you're trying to get information under fire, I have to wonder who shot your
decker <g>.

Sure, its gonna be slow. But if you're not going to be slicing into anywhere,
you don't need speed, just functionality.
