Subject: New GM - Starting Shadowrun???? NOTE (Possible UB Spoiler,
Date: Mon, 2 Jun 1997 12:12:13 -0400
Hi, I have posted to this list a couple of times, and I am about to post
a list of rules questions later this afternoon, but I had a few things I wanted to ask
first. Mainly, I am looking to see if any of the published Shadowrun adventures
or net adventures would be suitable to my group.
I am starting a campaign that will be centered around the terror of the
bugs. None of my players have ever played shadowrun before, nor have they
read any of the sourcebooks. I plan to start the campaign back before the UB
is discovered and lead the players all the way to the outbreak in Chicago (and see
how they get out of that one)., In my opinoin, however, the bugs are only truly
frightning if you compare them to the everyday 'threats' of the job, so I want to
have plenty of 'normal' shadowruns mixed in. I want to start the group out on
a pretty standard Shadowrun, and having not run the game in about 5 years,
I am trying to see if I can use a publised adventure or one already written. I would
like to keep the group in Seattle, and a fair mix of mind games and mayhem, just
enough to keep everyone going through the first run.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Maria Mercurial and DNA/DOA are good starter adventures. Also, if you
can get a copy of the Stuffer Shack encounter from the first edition
rulebook, that is a good opener. It helps you to practice the rules,
and will give you a feel for how your players will react and work
together.

One of my more successful bug runs was a 'B - movie' theme ..
'It came from the Desert'. Imagine:Big desert. One road east, one
west. An old, abandoned railroad. An old, abandoned mine. The town's
sleepy as hell, with a few farms. It's slowly dying. (Well, not so
slow, actually). Really 60'ish feel to it. Old american cars, drive
in cinema, one sherrif and his deputy.

Okay, while the players are there (Perhaps lying low after a run,
perhaps they are trying to find someone) strange things happen. Some
people start seeming awfully absentminded, or robotic (flesh form
workers, good melds).. and it's more and more of them. Let the
runners ally with some people in the city.. one or more of which
disappears, only to reappear.. and at a chosen moment, they turn all
bug-eyed. A lot of opportunity to scare'em senseless. Of course,
after a few days the bugs are powerful enough to build effective
roadblocks.. they want their herd to stay in place and behave, like
good cattle. Ants fits the theme well. Throw in a lot of B- movie
stuff, cheap shockers, and the occassional mistaken victim. (Someone
sleepy, perhaps, taken for a bug... shot to hell and then someone
comments, hey, he isn't all green and gooey inside). And of COURSE
the girl the macho sammie likes is, or will be, the fledgeling queen
of the hive....

The bugs appear to be based in the hospital (Don't get hurt, guys.),
their real camp is one of the abandoned mines. Or whatever.

Anyway, good luck.
