Better in that it doesn't take forever to scroll, open, etc, like the first
one did. (And that's in both adobe reader 6.0 and 7.0.)

Echo that. Much smoother experience. Nice work, Adam. The file is
slightly larger (62MB vs. 52MB), but worth it. Any descriptions of
what you did, Adam? Less intensive graphic compression?

Now all I have to do is find time to read it. Damn bees in the lawn.

The original version was an Export to PDF from InDesign -- I wanted
automagic bookmark generation. This version [aside from the color
plates] is printed to Postscript and then Distilled. There's something
about the InDesign files that Acrobat 6 and Preview continually choke
on if the file is Exported, but Postscript and then PDF seem to clear
up the problems.

Had to manually bookmark it, though. Fun fun.

Have you considered Exporting to PDF (for auto-bookmarking) & then
Optimizing the PDF from Acrobat ? (I don't have access to In Design so I
don't know if there are any settings you can fiddle in that.)

As I said in my original post: "There's something about the InDesign

Shoot, I coulda told you that ;)

Public Service Announcement: No matter what the program, no matter how
well they say they can make a PDF, always print to a postscript file
and then let Acrobat Distiller make the PDF. And make sure you tell
Distiller *how* to make the PDF (its default setting leave something
to be desired, but they're still better then letting the publishing
software do it). Yes, it can be a pain in the ass and there's a steep
learning curve but in the end it's always worth it.

BTW, I did 2+ years of customer support for a printer so I mostly know
what I'm talking about ;)

btw, $25 for a well done electronic version is very cheap when you factor in
the functionality

Still takes forever to print, though. I'm just trying to print the first 8 pages of
fiction, and it's already taken 10 minutes for the first three. \:

I also noticed that the sample character pages have come out a lot
darker than in the previous version. The text is still quite readable,
but some of the images are hard to make out (like the Covert Ops
Specialist or the Face).

Other than that, the new PDF is much better.

I vaguely remember a Win32 program that would auto-generate bookmarks
in a PDF. It worked, IIRC, by scanning the text looking for sections
with (user specified) font characteristics. Like "If it's 14 point
bold Missive, it must be a section heading". If you knew your way
around Adobe's PDF API, I'd bet it wouldn't be to hard to hack
together an implementation that got you 95% of the way to what you
wanted without much pain.

Check your monitor settings, for example with
http://pages.prodigy.net/ecmorris/tips/monitor.htm. It could well be
that your monitor is set much darker than the one on which the PDF was
produced (this is actually very likely, as Adam made the PDF on a Mac
AFAIK, and Macs tend to have their displays set lighter than Windows
machines).

"gamma" is supposed to mean, either. Why not just call it "lightness"

Because it's not only the brightness. You can change 'pure' brightness on
most screens manually. Gamma correction is done by the software, and
fiddles with some other stats, too.

After a little poking and proding, I found out it's the fault of
Acrobat Reader 7 for Linux. Both files showed up fine under Windows
(which, alas, I'm using less and less). I hope Adobe corrects the bug
on future versions :).
