First, thanks to Loki for pointing me in the right
direction. I was on the list a year ago and I guess
you guys moved it.

I bought Magic in the Shadows last night, great book.
I didn't have many of the 2nd edition books and I
couldn't find anything about initiation in the SR3
book.

How often do PCs initiate?

Is there a max?

Also, is the revised Shadowrun Companion already out?

And the book called "New Seattle", is that the revised
source book for 3rd edition?

When they can afford it and it fits into the game.

I don't believe so, unless they added that with MitS. (I own it, but
haven't read it yet..)

>Also, is the revised Shadowrun Companion already out?

Yes. (Same stock number as the old one, available at the FASA page and fine
booksellers who's distributors aren't clueless twerps.)

Well, it's a revised sourcebook released after 3rd edition, but it doesn't
actually have any -rules- in it (Because place sourcebooks shouldn't have
rules, goddamnit!), so it can be used with any edition.

It's mostly rehashed info, but it's a good buy to update seattle to 206x
and to consolidate alot of older info (Original Seattle, Mob War!,
Underworld, and some other little things..)

That's because its not in SR3, which is a "basic" rules book, like the
previous 2 editions. Intiation has always been an "add on" (from the
previous 2 versions of "The Grimoire", now from MiTS)

:How often do PCs initiate?

As often as they feel like it, unless the GM deems it innapropriate and
puts some limit on it. There should be some roll played signifigance to
intiation, so it would not be frequent, although given how Shadowrunners
"mature", thier advancement might seem rapid to his fellow mages who are not
earing kamra on weekly shadowruns. I'd think it would be silly if they did
it more than once a month (of game time) or after every other little
Shadowrun, and would at least expect them to increase a skill or attributte
between intiations. [note, I'm allowing for a VERY fast paced game here-
most would a good bit slower]

:Is there a max?

None is given, but by the time you need one, the characters would be so
powerful you might want to start over.

:Also, is the revised Shadowrun Companion already out?

Yes. Its described on FASA's website.

:And the book called "New Seattle", is that the revised
:source book for 3rd edition?

Yes, also on FASA's website.

According to Adam Lewis, at 7:25 on 13 May 99, the word on
the street was...

> How often do PCs initiate?

Not all that often, in my experience. In one of the groups here, out of
four magicians, two have initiated somewhere in the past year while the
one of others doesn't seem to feel it worth her Karma, and the other
doesn't really know about it yet (being a new player).

> Is there a max?

Not AFAIK.

> Also, is the revised Shadowrun Companion already out?

It's been out for about two months now. However, if you own the original,
this version isn't really worth buying -- there's some new stuff, but
nothing you absolutely _need_ IMHO. (I'd recommend copying the new costs
for the points system and some of the edges and flaws from the new book,
if someone you know owns it.)

It's not edition-specific, rather it updates the Seattle setting to 2060
(the Seattle Sourcebook was set in 2050). This one is worth buying even if
you already have the Seattle Sourcebook, I'd say, as it has plenty of new
material and much useful info.

This was a little aggravating for me last night. When
I get a new book I read it cover to cover, including
the "Developers Thoughts" or whatever it was called in
MitS.

When he made a reference to an "old" rule, he pointed
out what book and page number he was refering too. But
when he started in on Initiation, it didn't say where
this rule was covered. So I spent a good 20 minutes
re-reading the magic sections of the basic rules
assuming I missed something.

Anyway...

Whenever they have the time, karma, and success to do so? Moderated only by
the game the character is involved in.

> Is there a max?

Not really.

> Also, is the revised Shadowrun Companion already out?

Yes.

> And the book called "New Seattle", is that the revised

Yes.
