I'm sure FASA is accepting submissions for a sourcebook along those lines.

Speaking of submitting to FASA, has anyone on this list sent for and
received submission guidelines from the FASA folks? Have you gone a step
further and submitted a proposal? How does the process work?

I've just finished running part I to an adventure which the players have
given me accolades for--mainly the plot and characters. Several people
have suggested submitting it to FASA on the outside shot it "fulfils their
need at this time." I'd like to know how the politics work; I'm positive
with the size of this list that _someone_ has tried or at least taken the
first few steps.

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?

I have not worked with FASA (mostly cuz I don't have much in terms of
stuff that is worthy), but I have submitted to and been published by
Steve Jackson Games. The whole ordeal went something like:
I write them saying "I have an idea for X, are you interested"
They write me saying "Go for it."
I write the thing.
I send it to them.
They send me $$$ (sometimes they forget this step, so be careful)
They publish it.

Note, that in the time since the above happened, they have developed more
definitive submission guidelines, and I'm sure FASA is the same way.
Start by writing a letter to them asking for submission guidelines. They
will either send them to you, or drop you a note saying they don't have
any. Then proceed with a query letter to see if they are interested in
the idea first.

I wrote the original rules for fixed-wing aircraft in Car Wars, which was
eventually adapted into AeroDuel and then into GURPS AutoDuel (and
possibly other GURPS and Car Wars stuff).

All that work, and all I got was $120. *grumble* (but that's another story)

Hmmm. If you ask me, someone is just complaining about it. So what if you
wrote the rules for Fixed Wing. Any material submitted to just about any
corporation becomed the property of that corporation. So really they had
the right to take them. Be luck you got a check because they didn't have
to give you that.

BZZZZ

Not only must I submit it, but I must also IN WRITING sign over my
copyright to their use. SJG has/had a release form that must be filled
out by the original author, which I asked them for, which they never sent
to me. Thus, I never released the information to them to publish.
Furthermore, I submitted the material to AutoDuel Quarterly, a SJG
magazine. That was not blanket permission to utilize those rules in OTHER
publications. SJG paid me 2 cents a word.

I feel that since I did not sign a blanket release for SJG to use my
material, they have violated my copyright by using that material outside
of the magazine I submitted it to. BUT, because that was about 7 years
ago, I no longer have a claim (statute of limitations) and it is hardly
worth it anyways due to the fact that anything I might get in terms of
cash would be sucked dry by the lawyers.

But, the legal discussions are immaterial to the subject of this list,
except to say that if you EVER write something, make sure you have in
detail what you will get for it, and what you will get for future uses of
that material.
