Mongoose is 38 in our timeline (having been born new years, 2018- gack,
thats pushing 43 in FASA's timeline). I wanted to play an "old fart",
with a lot of contacts, a solid rep, good (but "tried and true") cyber,
and on the brink of a "midlife crisis" (he's an elf, but heck, its not
like he's met anybody older than 80).
I like playing a charcter with a longer past and no need for an
attitude. I don't think running, at certain levels, should / could be a
young persons game. It was also interesting writing a background for a
"first wave" elf, and a very "unelven" one at that. For example, he's
EX-ancients; he can't stand all the new Sprethiel spewing "fops", and
remembers when the Ancients were about funny-looking kids banding
together to not to get beat up (and later running some really violent
rackets)- his crew as a youth ganger was the "Insane Ancients".
So, there yah go, a 2 fer one- a nickname source, and a "old runner".
BTW, "Mongoose" was his mom's nickname for him, since he was the first
metahuman in the family, just like the quiksilver Mongoose was the first
awakened critter. His ganger name was "Zipgun", cause he had a implant
shotgun (no cyberarm- cheap, but an essence hog, if you go by
Cybertechnolgy). Still has it- in a stongbox, not in his body. He went
over to "Mongoose" when he became a "made man" of sorts, since it was
partly that he was given upgraded speed-wares in return for saving a
major Chicago fixers life, so that he could be one of the guys
bodyguards. He's since played rikki-tikki-tavi for team mates more than
a few times.

So far, most of my characters are late teens/early 20's. I have one or
two PCs who are 28 or so. SInce I've just started the game, and since
I'm a young 'um myself, none of my chars are really that old. :)

Something I've noticed among my players (and myself) is that the younger
players (who are around 18) make characters who are slightly older than
they themselves are, while the older ones in the group (around 23 -- okay,
older relative to the rest of the group :) stick to characters of about
their own age, so we end up with a group of PCs all in their early 20s. I
have a feeling that if we're still playing in 5 years' time, we'll all be
making characters younger than we are...

I think you may be reading more into it than you need to. I tend to make
my characters in their early 20s because that's the age I think most
people will start their shadowrun career. There are of course
exceptions: 2 otakus of age ~16 and a company (notice I said nothing of
formere ;) who was approaching 30.

My characters vary in age, mostly staying in the 21-25 range, some
older ones.
The "regular" NPCs are a bit younger.
