You say po-tay-to, I say po-tah-to. IMHO, metal is NOT all
about speed, but I suspect that I am in the minority on that score.

Again, I disagree. Distortion, yes. Speed? Perhaps. Discord?
No. A lot of the solos and bridges in their earlier work felt like they
were just sort of shoe-horned into the piece, like the rest of the band
is playing one thing and the soloist is just off sort of doing his own
thing with no regard to tempo, key, or continuity. In that respect, it
reminds me of everything I hate about acid jazz (where you're
essentially told, "if you accidentally hit a sour note, hit it again -
that makes it sound intentional and 'edgy'").
But I suspect that this is just a difference in likes and
dislikes, so I'll take your word that you didn't like the album(s).
Oh, and for what it's worth, I don't particularly like St. Anger
either.

I never said metal was about speed. However, what may sound to the
casual listener as fast and furious "note-cramming" in the solos on Kill
'Em All is in fact something far more advanced from a guitarists
perspective. Try reading the music for some of those solos and you'll
see there's a lot more structure to them than you may think. The same
goes for the solos on pretty much every album up to and including
"Metallica".

To me, a large part of what metal is is the guitar (perhaps because I am
a guitarist myself), and Kirk Hammett had (note the past-tense) a very
unique and modular style of playing that is NOT easy to duplicate. At
the other end of the spectrum, the late Dimebag Darrell of Pantera had a
completely freestyle approach to his solos and rhythm guitar that, IMO,
made him one of the great guitar and metal legends of our time.
