You say po-tay-to, I say po-tah-to. IMHO, metal is NOT all
about speed, but I suspect that I am in the minority on that score.

Again, I disagree. Distortion, yes. Speed? Perhaps. Discord?
No. A lot of the solos and bridges in their earlier work felt like they
were just sort of shoe-horned into the piece, like the rest of the band
is playing one thing and the soloist is just off sort of doing his own
thing with no regard to tempo, key, or continuity. In that respect, it
reminds me of everything I hate about acid jazz (where you're
essentially told, "if you accidentally hit a sour note, hit it again -
that makes it sound intentional and 'edgy'").
But I suspect that this is just a difference in likes and
dislikes, so I'll take your word that you didn't like the album(s).
Oh, and for what it's worth, I don't particularly like St. Anger
either.
