After reading that story over again last night, I'm wondering: Did Renny,
Halberstam, etc. ever appear again? Was that project ever explored more? Was
it, as I suspect, the creation of the first Otaku?

Wasn't there something about it in Threats? I don't have my book handy,
but I think there was...Halberstams Babies, or somethinglike that?

Yep, Halberstams Babies is in Threats.

Anyways, good book to get. Explains a couple of things about the Sixth
World. Interesting read, also.

Heres a link where a bookstore is selling it for $16.50

Ack! Thats a long link. Better bet is to go to www.amazon.com, search for
threats and look in zShops, which are shops that are linked to Amazon, but
sell older and used books.

The next step in Dr. Halberstam's experiments are detailed in the Threats
sourcebook. You can also find some information about him in the SR novel
Psychotrope.

As far as I can tell, he had absolutely nothing to do with the creation of
the Otaku. In fact, the entity(ies?) that create the Otaku would probably
not like the good doctor at all.

Halberstam is also mentioned in Lisa Smedman's novel
"Psychotrope."

It's the short story that makes up half of Virtual Realities, a sourcebook
that expanded the Matrix rules for SR 1st edition.

Couple of things to help here.

1) Halbersteim's Babies is explained in considerable detail in the
"Threats" book as has been mentioned already. It details some very sinister
considerations with regards to the concepts of keeping the nervous systems
of the children alive (functional at least) and using them as a kind of
"brain-born matrix operator". Not the same thing as the Otaku by a long
step, but there are many similarities between the two.

2) Renny makes a couple of "appearances" in the old shadowtalk boxes of a
few books, Shadowtech mostly I think.

3) Halbersteim was explored very briefly in the novel Psychotrope, of who's
events may be explained a bit more in upcoming sourcebook releases.

4) Halbersteim would also be considered an "Enemy of the Resonance" IMO,
and I can see some really cool storyline/conflicts being created out the
events of such. In our home games, Halbersteim's mere name is enough to get
every otaku, and many of the deckers and magicians, into a foaming frenzy in
little to no time, he's hated that much.

In Psychotrope, it is pretty much stated IIRC that the AI doesn't like
the competitiion....
Course, novel's aren't exactly accurate all the time...
some of the time?

any of the time?
