To all those worshipers of the Almighty Dave
Shadowland (www.shadowland.org) is up as of 10/31/97! To those who know
not what Shadowland is, it is a multiuser WWW Java BBS created and
maintained by The Almighty Dave (Hyatt). On it there are bases for
Shadowrun, Earthdawn, B-Tech, and World of Darkness. Sadly you MUST have
java for this version and you also should have Navagitor or IE 4.0, but
any browser that uses Java should work. It also has Live Chat (also
created by DAVE) focused on SR. It is my home away from Home.

Czar (I think I'm just HAPPY!)

Yeah, but does it still take half an hour to login?

IIRC it had a nice "loading" splash screen, but usually I spent more time
looking at that than anything else... :)

Well, Shadowland Five, frontpage, took around 1 minute 13 seconds to
come down on 55.6, the front end has changed from what I remember,
though I'm not too impressed with the front page graphic.

Somebody needs to review their colour scheme as well. The disclaimer is
so small it's virtually unreadable, and is contained in a poorly
formatted table, the black on dark blue section of the entry form is
unreadable, but once past that, everything is pretty much OK.

Various screens open in seperate windows - consider using something like
MSIE 4.0 (though I wouldn't advise it) or (better for this) Netscape
Communicator (4.0). Netscape Java enabled browsers most likely will
work fine, but I have a feeling something with a little more power might
be needed. Some problems can be experienced with Netscape 3, but it
works, I wouldn't advise anyone to even try to get access with MSIE
2-3.0 or Netscape 2

In retrospect, I really, really would advise that visitors use Netscape
4.0. It does take full advantage of the facilities available on
Shadowland.

The Java chat and menu screen took forever to come down to me, but then
I'm in the UK so...

Initial impressions - don't go there unless someone else is paying, or
you have a fast connection. Don't go there unless your browser can cope
with java in a big way. Don't go there unless your system has
sufficient memory to deal with multiple screens.

Otherwise, Yeah, it's Shadowland, it's back, and it's about as good as
it ever was. Most of the previous data has been lost (surprise)
apparently some sort of catastorphic crash destroyed it all, so those
that have been there before and are familiar with the place, don't
expect to find the old data until it's been restored or re-submitted.

Barsaive (EarthDawn - very few users) and MercNet (Battletech - no use
at present) are about the same as above. Slow as hell, until it's all
downloaded, then reasonably quick, but... Netscape 4.0 - sorry guys and
gals, it's needed really.

The above is not to be taken as a direct criticism of the site, just my
observations.

As a former habitue of Shadowland, (I was really into it, some might
remember me as Chimera) I must say the news is a big relief to
me. Does it have everything he promised, like being able to insert
comments in between the text like in the sourcebooks?
I must say, however, from having been there a couple of times before it
was finished, I preferred the old one a little better. The various
full-page forum lists were easier to follow than the little box-menu
with the expanding folder thing (what do you call those anyways?)

Fortunately, I have access to a silicon-graphics workstation running
XWindows with Netscape 4.03 :)
