How about this in the mean time...

SHADOWRUNNERS OF CATAN -- A Sixth World Version of SETTLERS OF CATAN

This follows all the normal rules for Settlers of Catan, only the playing
pieces and some of the terminology needs to be modified as outlined below
(note that I'm working from a Dutch version of the game here, so some of
the terms I use may differ from the English translation). Modifying the
cards and actual playing pieces is pretty much a must, IMO, but who's going
to draw all that?

I LOVE IT! :):):):)

Instead of Compound, how about Highrise, or Office Building, or...
corportate something. When I think compound, I see a military compound in
my mind's eye.

I'm going to have to borrow a friend's (Gurth, remember Chuck? :) copy of
Settler's and work on this making a working version :)

Brilliant! A redesign of all the cards, counters and placing pieces
and you basically have a SR version where you play a megacorp. Now
I just need some time with Photoshop...

Good point. First you put up a highrise and then turn it into an arcology.
Maybe Regional Headquarters would be good. I also just thought that the
Progress cards would better be renamed SOTA, for that SR-feel :)

> I'm going to have to borrow a friend's (Gurth, remember Chuck? :)

The one in Boulder? If that's him, then I must confess that I remember his
house and his dog better than Chuck himself :)

It shouldn't be too hard to do with some photographs and DTP work, but I
don't think the publishers would appreciate it being put up on the WWW, and
if I can't do that then IMO the effort would be rather wasted... :(

Actually if you have "Cities and Knights of Catan" you could maybe do
somethin like this..

village = corporate compound
city = corporate highrise
metropolis = arcology

also the new resource cards could be...
paper = paydata? (need a matrix resource)
coin = nuyen
cloth = armor/fashion

Some of the various buildings in the flip books would need to be renamed,
the barbarian horde in the ship could be a shadowrun group in a Banshee,
soldiers would be security, and walls could be... walls.. or wards. Also
if you use seafarers the ships could be smuggling routes.

I don't have that supplement, but it's a good idea to also take it into
account :)

We already had nuyen (you get it from the Barrens by exploiting the masses),
so maybe this could be black information?

I'd go for fashion.

How about an insect spirit hive setting up shop?

I was thinking Archology instead of Village and then use Sprawl instead of
City. Metroplex would work equally well however IMHO.

I don't have it either.. but a friend of a friend picked it up in Germany
and found translations of the rules on line somewhere.

On that note.. we've seen several game companies make "expansions" to the
game. They don't print any of the game pieces or rules that come with
Settlers. If you were to put up all original pieces and didn't reprint any
of the rules from the actual game I don't think anybody would mind too
much... I'd be willing to looking through my friend's copy of Cities and
Knights to get the names of all the pieces and cards for translation into
Shadowrun terms...

I like the SOTA idea. And how about corporate facility in place of
village, and then regional headquarters in place of city.

Oy. I still feel bad about that dog mix up.

I don't know about that. I've found several web sites with Settlers of
Catan variants. Putting up hexagonal pictures that happen to be the same
size as the SoC hexagons wouldn't be an infringement.

OTOH, I think those companies are paying some kind of license fee to
whoever owns the rights to the original game, which the creator of a
Shadowrun version wouldn't do.

Please do, even though (if I get round to making an actual SR version) I'll
keep it limited to the basic game first. That seems like enough work as it
is :)

And then it could be upgraded to an arcology if/when we decide to also
convert the expansions.

But putting up the cards might be. Still, if there's already a thriving
effort to expand the game on-line, then I think we'd be fairly safe :) I
think I'll need to go look through some of my clip art CDs to find some
pictures that could be used for this...

Doh. I forgot the original idea I had at work. I was thinking Regional
Headquarters, and then Arcology. Drop the whole corporate facility idea
(at least for the basic rules).
