[snip: shaped charges]

I think what the original post was refering to was that in
the movie the character made a small explosive device that
had a shaped explosion. When the device went off the force
of the explosion only went in one direction. Is that
possible in RL?

Not entirely. You'll still get some (relatively) small amount of
explosive force projected backwards from the target.... Most of it would
however progress through whatever you wish to go through.... usually Tanks,
etc.

It's really not generally a good idea to stand at all close to an
explosive detonation, just in case. I don't know how you'd work the
rules for this kind of work and blast effect. Personally I'd just avoid it.

I asked an ex-army guy about shaped charges the other day, and he said
that the grunts get one piece of advice if they meet a tank.

-Run, really fast, and call in a helicopter or the engineers.

Sounds like good advice to me.

You'd have to have something to contain the blast with, I think that'd
take something strong enough to stand up to the force of the explosion
though...

It's really all the same, and no one's happy and nobody's to blame.
