Since a smartlink can be put in a firearm, could a sniper's spotter use a
smartlink for a spotter scope?

I do not belive that smartguns of any kind can be used with
any kind of image enhancement. There are probably tons of reasons
for and aginst this but the main reason is game ballence. A target number
of 2 at extreame range!?! NOT!!

I have been playing SR(both I & II) for some time now, and my GM has never
allowed scopes and smartlinks to be used together. Smartlinks and
cyberoptic magnification are a different matter though.

IMHO the rifle scope rules for SR are a bit dodgy. Let's consider the
following example:
Joe the Sniper (DIN 142214/4) is going to shoot Max the Unsuspecting Target
from a rooftop with his trusty Ranger Arms SM-3 (complete with Mag-3 scope,
of course). Let's assume that the range is 399.5 meters. At that range Joe's
chance of hitting Max are the same as the chance of hitting him at short range
However, if Max takes one step away from Joe, Joe's chance of hitting him are
nil.

I saw a rule on rec.games.frp.cyber the other day which I think would be
a good replacement. It stated that instead of treating additional ranges as
short, the weapon's ranges should be multiplied by (1+rating). That would
change the ranges of the SR-3 from

0-400 Short

to

0-60 Short
60 - 240 Medium
etc.
Max range 1600m

IMHO this gives a more accurate representation of sniper rifles. Any modern day
sniper rifle (At least the standard NATO sniper rifles) has an effective
range of at least 1200m.

Ooops, didn't have the ranges for sniper rifles when I wrote this.

Should read

0-240 short
240-400 medium
400-1000 long
1000-1600 extreme
