Hi All, Just a quick question.

I am thinking of grabbing a few friends together and running a game for the
first time ( I have just been a player up to now ).

The question that I wanted to ask is :

Until the new source material comes out for SR3 should stick to SR2 material
or go with SR3?

Also if I go with SR2 what sourcebooks should I allow?

I have FOF and StreetSam but I have a nasty idea that someone in the group
will eventully spot the Barrett 121. I know I could just rule 'No Chance.
It's out of your reach' sort of thing but I would like to leave things open.

I was thinking of just using the SR2 rule book or just the SR3 rulebook and
saying that players could pick anything they want from those books and
anything else has to be gained in game time.

If anyone has any ideas they would be greatfully recieved.

Cheers

Thres not much SR3 material to stick with, but R2 and VR@ are definatley
safe; the few chanes for SR3 are detailed in the SR3 rulebook.

<shrug> any that fit your game?

SR3 character creation limits the availabity of starting gear to 8. Thats
a pretty nice balance point, where most of sourcebooks have something
nice, but nothing really outrageous. (You could get a Franchi Spas, but
not a Barret 121).

So, feel free to use the old sourcebooks- just limit the availibity of
starting gear. Most of the stuff in those books should stick around
unchanged, but FASA is coming out with new Shadowrun gun / combat (Cannon
Comapanion) and an implant tech (Man And Machine) books - both are slated
release next summer.

Try to stay away from initiation type magic until you can use the "Magic
in the Shadows" rules- they will be designed to work with SR3. Using the
grimoire could create problems, now and when you try to switch over to
MitS rules.

You may have to wait a while for more SR3 books, so go with what
you've got for the moment.

Allow? I presume you mean gear and archetypes. Stick to what you know
for the moment.
Probably jsut the gear in SR3.

Sounds good, this way you'll have more control over the team in your
first games as GM.

Good Luck and enjoy it!

According to Andrew Benn, at 1:12 on 17 Dec 98, the word on
the street was...

I would suggest using SR3 rules and second edition sourcebooks, at least
until updates come out and you buy them (if you want to).

> Also if I go with SR2 what sourcebooks should I allow?

If this is your first time running a game, I would say only gear books.
Stay away from things that add optional rules (like the rules chapter of
Fields of Fire), because it will make it more difficult for you to
remember the rules. Gear isn't so much of a problem, because all weapons
etc. have the same kind of stats anyway.

Strictly enforce Availability. With a TN of 14, the PCs can't buy it at
character generation under SR3 rules (max is 8), and I wish them good luck
rolling a 14 when they need it. Oh yeah, and just because one of the PCs
does manage to get the weapon does not mean it has ammo with it -- oops,
roll another 14 to get ONE BOX...

As I said above, using the SR3 rulebook would be better than using the
SRII rulebook, mainly because it has much better vehicle and decking
rules. Furthermore, if you plan on running a campaign it's probably better
to use SR3 from the start rather than switching to it after a few months.
