Blame it on AD$D, for which Fireball works completely differently.

FWIW the same player was also shocked to find that it's possible to
kill someone with a Sleep spell (he didn't know it was nothing more
than an area effect Stun spell). <shrug>

Oh well, Charon's 2018 Dodge Lightning mas a speed rating of 300. So 450
max. (that's 540 kph). Kick in the nitros and you have 750mpr (900kph).
(Max. speed for the sports car cassis is 311, btw (with smart materials,
that is) plus whatever tirbocharging yu want to add (giving up to 389 mpr)

Well, nobody said the R2 rules are very realistic in the extremes, right?

In this one circumstance, I would say they are very realistic at least. Cars
going that fast and are not "chassis designed" for such will go airborne in
the most colorful of fashion. I once saw one that somebody tried taking over
230 MPH (that's 370.14 KPH) at a time trial...something went wrong (don't know
what) and the car's nose went sailing up, body followed, beautiful
flip...could have been an olympic floor gymnastics contender...

Ouch!

Aerodynamics are a bitch (try building a car that has a chassis that
requires air below the car to travell faster than above the car and you are
save. I'm just not sure that's possible (picture of really strange vehicles
come to mind))
Besides, Barbie once had the idea to use an air elemental to speed up a
car. Something for the ultimate speed-freak....:)

We've done that here, and I know many have elsewhere. However, I was trying
to think of a "purely technological" means of things.

I think the fastest ground car we've had was something in the neighborhood of
430 game speed. I think that's 344 MPH and 516 KPH. Not bad, more or less
around .5 mach...that still makes me dizzy. Haven't redesigned it yet using
R2..no real desire to at the moment.

any spirit with movement power will do inside his domain, but better is a
great form spirit :)
Much fun to speed up an HSCT with a force 10 spirit :)
Who needs transorbitals? ;)

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your POV), neither the RBB or
R2 rules really show the dangers of driving at such speeds. They are both
way too vague since things like corners and pedestrian/vehicle traffic only
show up as general DMs.

If you used a map like in Car Wars and had to actually perform maneuvers at
those speeds, well... :)

I've used Car Wars both for vehicle design and for vehicle combat in SR
:) Actually, it works passably well (as long as you don't get too into
combat on foot, where pedestrians die too fast for comfort)

Pete will doubtless point out the flaw in the system, that pressing a
.44 Magnum to your head and pulling the trigger results only in
unconsciousness. I'd reply that for an unskilled character in Shadowrun,
the same evolution results only in a Serious wound (called shot to the
head).

It does, though, show why top speed becomes unimportant, while
acceleration and handling are critical for urban chases: and for players
who care it's a lot more fun to weave down a street trading fire and
sideswiping an opponent into a lamp-post than it is rolling dice for
repeated Position Tests.

Reminds me of the nice incidend where a certain rigger had an aerodyne and
told us how fast it was (something round 400 km/h). Charon just raised an
eyebrow and said "And in 5th gear?"....:)

The going rule used to be to carry both a Light pistol and a Heavy pistol.
Shooting yourself with the LP first (doing 1 point of damage) allows you to
stay conscious long enough to actually kill yourself with the HP (2 points
of damage). As it currently stands, you can't even do this in Shadowrun
(Moderate plus Serious :)

Yeah, but even a Sammy react as fast as characters in Car Wars. During a
game a l-o-n-g time ago a pedestrian took a shot at a guy on a motorcycle.
During the next combat phase (after a whole *tenth* of a second) the rider
drew his sidearm, turned around, and shot the poor pedestrian :)
