Perhaps a combination of the mage/spirit mental link and the fact that
spirits are more attuned to the Astral plane? I believe the Grimoire mentions
spirits being able to trace the "wake" beings make in the Astral Plane, but
will have to investigate later.

That certainly would explain why watchers "time out" when they can't find
someone; they get trapped in the queue! *grin*

Not necessarily. How would one describe someone's aura in a way to make it
mean anything? Considering how the Astral Plane is more emotional and "feelings"
than the mundane, I'd say it's related to the way people who experience near
death experiences are unable to vocally describe it better than "a happy
place full of light".
