I spent some time today whipping up a possible back image. It uses
the "S" (from my BABY, in exact size), plus a radiating name design, and
some effects that play on the concept of "shadows". It has all the names
of last years shirt buyers, or most- I could fit more, if I tweaked the
fonts better, or put 2 in a line. You can see it at:
http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Chamber/5072/srbkmng1.jpg

No "Hello Kitty" involved, or jokes of any kind. I promise.

Well, so was yours, Dvixen... :)

Fragging hell again...
Here's the cut + p :
http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Chamber/5072/rnbkmng1.jpg

Note that I did it in white on black, but the white could easily be
"BABY" blue (well, not easily- I'm not sure if you can screen with shiny
ink), or something else. Somehow, I thinking that the shirts WILL be
black...

Damn, that's pretty. Mongoose, man, you have a gift!

Guys, I vote we use this as the back... pretty please?

(I would suggest leaving it white; 'BABY' blue would be too hard to read.)

Didn't have any time to look at it earlier, but now I did and you did a
great job there Mongoose. It certainly has my vote!

And verily, did Mongoose hastily scribble thusly...

The whole point of screen printing is that the ink used is of a tacky
consistency, and can be ANY colour you want...

Asking for a shiny or sparkly in will probably just cost a little more...

It is pretty, but it will need to be screened just right to look good on a
shirt. A lot of detail will get lost in the transition. Doing fade outs on a
shirt can be a little tricky.

When you move an image to newsprint, you lose 20% of its detail. Moving an
image to a shirt is a lot worse.

Cool. A little hard to read right now, but I found my name anyhow. ;-)
Yeah - white on black would be most appropriate, BUT:
1) proportions - it'd probably be best to arrange for the longer names
to be at the top and bottom, so as to get a more rectangular shape (so
it'd fit better)
2) are you sure the detail will come through? The inks used for
screening result in images more akin to line drawings, AFAIK - you've
got a *lot* of shading and stuff there...
3) it might make more sense to have the polarity of the names switch
over on the left side (ie rotate them 180o) so that they can actually
be read without asking the wearer to stand on their head... ;-)

I do not like how the names get turned upside down. I think they are
upside down. I also think it would not look right once it got printed onto
a shirt. The "glow" around the letters would need some work or be taken
out completely.

If the other effect problems can be overcome, I think the names might look
better if they flowed around a smoother ovoid shape rather then trying to
follow the design.

Just my opinion,

:Cool. A little hard to read right now, but I found my name anyhow. ;-)

Its a 500 x 500 jpg, about 100k. The original is a 2400 x 2400, in a
lossless format, and takes up about 2600k- the text is MUCH sharper.
Theres a formula you can use to determine pixels per inch needed
relative to halftone screen size and shades of gray desired- once I have
info from the printer, I'll use that to size the final design, and won't
send them a crappy web portable image.

:1) proportions - it'd probably be best to arrange for the longer names
:to be at the top and bottom, so as to get a more rectangular shape (so
:it'd fit better)

UM, Bite Me? :) I considered it. Its not feasible, unless I had a
real page layout program that can do text flows in selected areas, and
does text justification through font width expansion.
I don't, and I'm not sure it would really look better- I like the
"sunshine ray" look, anyhow. Rectangular blocks are so boring- almost as
boring as fitting the text into said block by hand!

:2) are you sure the detail will come through? The inks used for
:screening result in images more akin to line drawings, AFAIK - you've
:got a *lot* of shading and stuff there...

Yes, the subtle shading gets lost in halftoning, even though the high
resolution makes the text easily readable. The design could better fit
the medium, you are correct. I'm considering using a shaded gradient
across the entire text area, to avoid that, and will be talking to a
printer about technical details before I finalize anything.

:3) it might make more sense to have the polarity of the names switch
:over on the left side (i.e. rotate them 180o) so that they can actually
:be read without asking the wearer to stand on their head... ;-)

Well DUH. Its a SKETCH. Those are last years names, I just slapped
in the text real fast to see if the concept would work. I was interested
in seeing if it was read-able and attractive, and playing with Phreaky
Philters, not getting text that will not be used arranged as nicely as
possible by painstaking click and drag. Hell, I wasn't even to careful
about the positioning, and got real lazy on the left side!
But I'm glad to see others out there also know a thing or two
about text layout and screen printing, and that they seem to like the
basic idea. :)
