RARE. Not every case the PCs go on will actually involve the Enemy; in
fact most may deal with many of the other nasty denizens [metahumans
included] that exist in the Shadowrun world.
Taking the two examples of the Enemy given in the Threats book,
these guys are NASTY. GMs should be careful not to throw them at their
players one after the other. Besides, it detracts from the horror/shock
value.Don't let the game devolve into a 'bughunt'. The players should
never know where the next outbreak is coming from, until it's [almost]
too late.
When creating your own Enemies ,a good reference is the Horrors
sourcebook for Earthdawn, and of course any book by Lovecraft, or Call
of Cthulu sourcebook. Give them a flaw or two [like maybe salt, or
silver, being an excellent conductor of necrotic energy] so the PCs have
that SLIGHT edge they may need to stay alive.
Avoid going 'over the top' as far as power level; keep things at a
moderate [for YOUR campaign. I have yet to use any 'immortal elves' or
dragons in my game, which doesn't mean they don't exist. I just relegate
them to where I think they belong; deep in the shadows.]
While assensing spells and the like are useful in determining the
presense of the Enemy, the players should realize that their foes can
cloak themselves from many detections also, so sometimes, it will come
down to plain old fashioned gumshoe work, using their own intelligence
to determine what's REALLY going on.
