Oh, that's pretty lame. Think of it this way: back in the dark ages whenever
anything went wrong, it was blamed on evil spirits. People would try to appease
the good spirits to protect them from all those nasty acts of fate.

Accident and guard are the same thing, its just that they actually work in 2056.

Yes, a player could trip, or a tree could fall on him, or he could step in a gopher
hole and twist an ankle, or his car could get a flat tire, or an air conditioner could
fall out of an eighth story apartment window, or a cab could splash him right
before a meet with Mr. Johnson. Muggers looking for a target might pick him
instead of the next passer-by. In the house, a badly wired electrical plug could
give him a shock, he could eat spoiled mayonaise, the list of plumbing disasters is
endless.

The nature of the accident should match the terrain (and spirit type), the nature of
the summoner to some extent, and the power of the spirit. Low level spirits
probably just do mischief bad luck stuff. The higher the spirit's power, the more
they can warp reality to make the really bad stuff happen (who knew the steam
main was about to burst?)

Remember that the spirit must mainifest before using accident (but not guard), so
players might get to see the spirit appear and say "Jinx!" right before the air
conditioner lands them in the hospital.

Cop is using open door of police car, ready to shoot the runners. Suddenly
the cop car jumps into reverse, slamming the door into the cop. Cop's
knocked over on the ground, car's in a window display at Radio Shanty ("You
have questions, we've got cheap electronic crap").

Car chase: Suddenly the pursuing car shifts from fourth gear to first.
Street lights at the intersection signal green for all directions. Tire
blows out. Belt snaps.

Whether nature spirits can or cannot attack depends on your interpretation
of the rules... They have no listed damage code in any SR book I've seen
(unlike other spirits and critters), so from that, it seems they can't
attack. Alternatively, you can rule that nature spirits do (str)M Stun
damage with a successful attack, like (meta)humans. Until we get a
definitive ruling, IMHO you're going to have to decide for yourself on
this one...

You can use it for *anything* that would normally be considered an
accident: a car hitting a tree, someone getting electrocuted when putting
in a new lightbulb, a grenade blowing up too soon, a tree falling one
someone's head, the list goes on. It's one of those powers where you use
your imagination rather than look in a list what you can do with it...

First Ed. SR had rules for Nature spirits attacking, but for some unknown
reason they didn't make it into 2nd Ed. I've just used a conversion of
those when needed..

Very simple: it allows the spirit to cause an apparently normal accident.
For example, someone tripping over his own feet, a car failing to give
right of way, water mains breaking, and so on.

You're right, page 191 of SR1 has damage codes for nature spirits:
Land: 4S3, +1 Reach (SRII: 8S, +1 Reach?)
Sky: special (but I can't find where it explains this "special")
Water: 2D6 Stun (SRII: 6D Stun?)
Man: 3M4 (SRII: 4M?)

I believe that "special" was meant in the same way that Air Elemntals had
no "attack" per se, they just used their powers...Electrical Projection..
etc..

Looks about right, or you could make the attack power some function of the
spirit's force (plus modifiers based on the type of spirit, etc..).
