Just a note, please do not send me mail if you get an error about not
being able to find the server. There is a 99% probability that this is
simply because the DNS change to add lists.html.com was only done a
few hours ago and it hasn't made it's way around the net yet. It
may take a day or so for it to get completely ironed out.

Also, I just noticed that the subscribe form has the hostname hardcoded
into it, so you're not going to be able to subscribe if you have to hit
the subscription page via the IP address. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks to all those who have started joining the new list already. I
appreciate it.

For those who have the computer savvy to do it ('cause I'm not writing out
an explanation), you can bypass the DNS problem by setting your own
settings to use html.com's nameservers.

Primary: 206.246.226.13
Secondary: 206.246.226.6

This will allow you to pull up the URL with your web browser.

You can also set your mailer to use html.com's smtp server to send messages
to the new list (obviously, it knows where to send your mail). It will
accept external mails (I say having done just this to subscribe). The
server name is:

mail.html.com

Since the web-page requires you to send a confirmation e-mail anyway,
you're better off just using the html.com mail server to send the message.
This is only a temporary situation, as the new DNS settings will migrate
around the Net in a day or so.

Setting the nameservers like that can be pretty nasty (remember to
set them back!)... The IP address is 206.246.237.2, but the mail
server there won't accept mail if you just send it to that address.

I had to telnet to the mail port and forge mail from myself, then
forge the confirmation of the forged mail. I love unix. :-)

Great, now that you have figured out what is going on, could you let me in
on it? Is this the list move? If so could somebody please explain IN
ENGLISH what we are supposed to do to get subscribed where we are supposed
to be subscribed. Or is this all just techno-geek-babble about some other
topic that I'm not really supposed to understand and don't need to
understand?

This is the pre move move. We've opened ShadowRN on the new server, and
it's basically a free reign OT list for a little while, because we're
trying to push it up to a similar amount of messages that would come in on
a typical day, so we can make sure that the new listserver is up to the
task of dealing with us Shadowrun crazed fools.. :)

To subscribe, check out http://206.246.237.2/mailman/listinfo/shadowrn and
fill in the basic form there.

Also:

You can also make such adjustments via email by sending a message to:

ShadowRN-request@*****.html.com

with the word `help' in the subject or body (don't include the
quotes), and you will get back a message with instructions.

Adam,

I filled out the form to sub to the new server, and got a letter asking me
to confirm my subscription. But when I reply to that letter, I get a Host
not Found message from my mail server. I also sent a message to
ShadowRN-request@*****.html.com with the subject of 'help' (no quotes), and
got the same error message. Any clues?

Thanks,
David

Yes. It's the list move.
All this was about the web method of subscription not working for everyone
yet because it's still a new web site, and it's name might not have
propogated to the rest of the world yet.

(In order to get to a web site like www.geocities.com, the computer looks up
the name an a DNS (domain name server). The numbers supplied were a way of
getting past the DNS lookup table)

I don't have the address at hand....

DNS lookup failure perhaps?
He said it was a new site and would take time for it's DNS entry to
propogate, remember.

It's very simple - your mail server doesn't know that their mail server
exists yet (you can think of it as somebody moving into a new home with
a new telephone number - they give their new number to a friend, who
gives it to another friend etc. Eventually, everybody will get it, but
it might take a bit).

Easy answer: wait a day. If you know unix and the net, you can
circumvent things, but waiting a day is easiest.

I cut N paste the addy over the reply addy that was called up. Why it
worked I don't know but it did.
