This was forwarded to me from DOOM via the Earthdawn list. This is what
I based my earlier posting on. Apparently, because of the problems with
Vorlon (soon it will be fixed, dammit!), the original message from Tom
Dowd never arrived in my hands.

This means people can't have SR quotes in their .sigs anymore. A couple of
people out there do I know.

Well, doesn't this cover just about everything we send to the list? Might as
well put the statement in my .sig, so it's there automatically.

That's not necessarilly true. A quote, properly attributed, comes under
fair use.

Depends on what country you live in. Some nations will respect another
nation's copyright and trademark laws, others don't.

According to the fair use doctrine, you ARE permitted to have excerpts
from copyright words. I believe the limit is around 300 words, and
usually for the purpose of discussion or disagreement.

That's a good question, and I'll be following up that original letter
with some questions sometime next week, including this. It might be
enough to put that into the FAQ.

I believe that copyright laws do apply internationally. When my mother wrote
the coursepackets for Italian 101, 102, 103, and 104 a year or so ago, and
especially with her book "il carciofo" (The Artichoke), she had copyright
problems using Italian artworks.

I think that if our Fearless Leader just puts it in the FAQ
someplace then it will be enough. Remember -- a discussion-type mailing
list like this one is considered a conversation by most electronic copyright
x-burts. ^^^^^^^^^^^^
