I have received word from the powers that be at Hearn that the past logs
are starting to take up a little bit of room (perhaps 20 megs). They
would like some solutions about how to fix that.

Ideas:
1) Remove everything prior to say Auguest 1993
2) Compress old logs. I'm not sure how this would happen, maybe
put into a uuencoded .zip (will save about 30 to 35 percent)
3) ?????

I'd appreciate some input about what I should do with them. The Lord of
HEARN would like to keep them online, but I'm not really sure HOW to
accomplish this effectively. Please offor opinions.

NOTE: ShadowTK opinions should be sent to PLOT-D, not to ShadowTK, and
I'll get really cranky at anyone that doesn't do that.

Thanks for your time.

.ZIPping them might be okay, but GZIP (.Z) seems to be more
prevalent on hosts around the 'net.
Another possibility is editing the older ones (more than three or
four months ago) to get rid of non-Shadowrun messages. This message would
be one good example.

Zip is universally compatible regardless of whether you are on UNIX or
some other system. GZIP (.gz, not .Z, which is COMPRESS) is really only
around on UNIX, although there are some decompressors for DOS, I haven't
seen any for VMS or MAC. ZIP is the best choice.

Who's got the time to do that? It will be hard enough coming up with the
time to get everything compressed :-)

As far as Run logs go, I don't see a problem. My thoughts on Talk logs prior
to this date have been sent to Plot-D, to avoid an angry administrator. :)

This might prove to be a problem for some people who are unable to unzip
the files. If you do this, you should include and instruction sheet that
explains how to unencode them. Make it plain dumb fer the ig'nrant. I've
had about a dozen people come up and ask how to unzip stuff they've dowloaded
to their mac, or how to run a zipped program directly from their account
(general student accounts here are VMS).

Another option is to check any of the freenets or Shadowrun sites (teetot,
umich) about maintaining the logs there. With any luck, I may be able to
do this by summertime :) x (fingers crossed).

Well, the problem is disk space, right? I suppose if you want to keep them
unencoded and online via Hearn, each listmember could donate 2-3 bucks.
With 150-200 people, that should buy a sizable drive. And if it was big
enough, we could have the honor of renting out disk space to other users :)

Send mail to ShadowRN.com%shadowrun@*****.nic.surfnet.nl :)

hi

i think it would be best if the files are compressed with 'gzip'
this will make files with the ending .gz or .z(old versions).
the advantage to zip is that it is possible to comp. single files
at the same comp. rate without putting them in one file.
and the gzip program is avaible for unix, dos, ... (on internet).
