Yes. In fact, you get 14 karma for killing her, or any other 90210 cast
member. 20 for killing them slowly :)

I've got a spare copy of Harlequin that I'm willing to donate to the prize
pool for this.

Sorry, I forgot about that :) Here's what's on the web page:

-----

PLASTIC WARRIORS FIRST NON-ANNUAL SHADOWRUN ADVENTURE COMPETITION

In response to a question about a "missing" title in FASA's publication
schedule, Boondocker posted the following to the ShadowRN mailing list on
31 January 2001:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7321: Spring Break!
Price: $12.00
Status: Coming Soon
ISBN: 1-5S5&0-323-56
Description: What happens when a wealthy college student goes missing
during a Carib League vacation and his father turns to shadowrunners to
find him? PAAAAARTY!!! Hilarity and high-stakes drama ensue in this taut,
thrilling, beer-and-babe filled adventure where the crazy hijinks never
stop! Can the runners remain sober throughout the weekend-long kegger? Can
they avoid the attentions of the suspiciously well-informed Dutch swimsuit
team? Pack the battle van, bring your kevlar swim trunks and head down
south for Spring Break!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Obviously a joke, but when it was reposted recently because someone
remembered it as a serious post, it gave me the idea for a little
competition intended to actually write this adventure.

PRIZE

The author of the winning adventure will receive a copy of Year of the
Comet, as well as one of Harlequin (courtesy of Damion Milliken --
thanks!). Furthermore, the adventure will be published on the Plastic
Warriors web site (http://plastic.dumpshock.com).

There's only a first prize, though -- no reward for coming in second :)

RULES

The following rules apply to the competition:

* Every participant may only submit a single adventure. No one is excluded
from this competition, except for anyone involved in judging it (so far,
that's only me, Gurth <gurth@******.nl>, but I'm looking for additional
judges as well).
* The adventure must unfold in such a way that it fits the text quoted
above exactly -- that text should be usable as the back cover blurb for the
adventure, were it to be published as an actual book.
* The adventure should be between 5,000 and 10,000 words in length. It
should be written up as a full adventure, describing and giving game stats
for all important NPCs and all scenes the player characters are likely to
find themselves in; a good guide for the format are the older adventure
books FASA used to publish, such as DNA/DOA, Mercurial, Dreamchipper, and
so on. Basically, what that means is that it has to be ready-to-run for a
gamemaster who has only read it a couple of times.
* References to existing rule- and sourcebooks (either published by FASA
or available on the net) can be made, but should be kept sensible.
Referring to books hardly anyone will own, or requiring an extensive
Shadowrun library in order to run the adventure, are not good ideas.
* Include your name (and/or nick) as well as your e-mail and snail-mail
addresses at the start of the adventure.
* The judge's decision is final; correspondence about the decision may be
entered into, but only if you don't appear to be whining about not winning
:)

WHERE & HOW

First up: entries that do not conform to the rules in this section will
NOT be accepted!

The finished adventure should be e-mailed, in either plain text or rich
text format (RTF), to <Gurth@******.nl>. The text for the entire adventure
should be contained in one file, and be compressed using either gzip or zip
(PKZip, WinZip, etc.), in order to save the judge(s) some downloading time.

Maps and other necessary pictures may be separate files, but should be
GIFs, JPEGs or TIFFs of good quality and not overly large file size. These
must be included in the same compressed file (zip can compress multiple
files into one zip file, but if using gzip please tar all the files first,
then gzip the tarfile).

If RTF format is used, the pictures can be included in the RTF file.
Please do not also include the same picture separately, as that will only
needlessly enlarge the eventual file size.

DEADLINE

The deadline for submitting adventures is Friday, 31 August 2001. Any
adventure received after that date may be included in the competition
anyway, but don't count on that happening -- make sure your entry is early
rather than late.

ENQUIRIES

Any questions about this competition can be addressed to Gurth at
<Gurth@******.nl>, who will do his best to answer them.

That depends on what you and the players want. There are no set rules
about how anyone has to GM or roleplay.

Whatever you want, as long as it fits the "advertising" blurb. How exactly
you make that work is entirely up to you.

I'm really interested as to how everyone will fit the Dutch Swimsuit Team
into it :)

I suspect that was the main reason Gurth started the contest ;)

Well, no... The whole thing put together sounds so plausible, even though
it's obviously a joke, that I felt it screamed out to be written up as a
real adventure.

You're not the only one :) But still, it'd be good if someone tried to take
the serious route.

Heck, I'm willing to try anything twice.
Especially when it involves free (good) stuff.

The question is, to make the Dutch Swimsuit Team a group of runners, or a
group of 'information specialists'.

:) Crazy (the Fanpro-Line Developer) loves strange/funny adventures. Last
Ratcon (the real german gencon ;) the multi-user adventure (multiple teams
of runners working on different objektives in one area) took place in an
old adventure theme park (Warner Bros MovieWorld, something like
Disneyland) with a go gang looking like the loonie tunes... quite strange
and funny (for those who like it, of course).

It'd be kind of cool if there could be two competitions. One serious only
and one humor only.

Well, you had the unfortunate privilege of starting a competition just
before two major conventions, and some of us are majorly strapped for time
(I, for instance, should not be replying to emails right now, I should be
working on fiction). But if the deadline can get extended for a little
while, until after Gen-Con, I'd love to take a whack at this. It looks like
much, much fun....

Would the 31st of August work for you? ;)

Hopefully, that's exactly what it will be. Although I am getting doubts
whether it'll be as much fun refereeing this thing I started... :)

I will help, even if means disqualifying myself. But please, only if

Thanks for the offer :) But since I have no idea how many people are
thinking about entering, let alone how many actually will, there's no need
to take you up on it yet. Anyone who doesn't intend to enter the
competition, but is interested in judging it (yeah, right :) please contact
me off-list...

You need to take a break, I think... Of course, odds are you don't have
time for that :)

That's what I figured as well. I'd prefer to get it over with sooner, but I
decided giving it about two months would give everyone enough time even if
they have other things to do as well.

I hope I'm not going to be saying that in two months time...

Hey, some of us can swing PDF files. Is that acceptable? :)

If you want your adventure to be rejected the moment I open the message,
sure :)

The format rules may sound harsh, but I decided on them mainly because I
don't want to get adventures in all kinds of different formats, and am
aiming for cross-platform compatibility, seeing as how I'm using a Linux
system while most people submitting articles probably will not be. (I was
thinking of also allowing HTML, but given the piss-poor HTML many programs
generate I decided against that.)

The line about immediate rejection if the format rules aren't adhered to is
mostly there so that I don't get a file I can't read, and have to ask the
person to re-send it in another format. Thus, plain text or RTF, gzipped or
zipped, is the only way to go.

Linux isn't a good reason not to allow PDF. The fact that you don't want
to receive PDFs /is/, but...

Even if you don't like the adobe PDF reader, try something like
http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/

I didn't say that -- you are reading things in my post that aren't there :)
I'm well aware that you can read PDFs on Linux, and probably on more
viewers than are available for Windows.

> The fact that you don't want to receive PDFs /is/, but...

Exactly. One of my major concerns here is file size, because if there's one
thing I don't like when getting my e-mail it's unexpected, large downloads.
RTF may be fairly large, but it compresses well, unlike most PDFs. I don't
dislike PDFs (quite the opposite, in fact) but I don't want to use them for
this competition.

A better way of putting it would be: "If you can't get Acrobat Reader to
work..." Anyway, this is not relevant to this thread; if I outlaw anything
other than ASCII and RTF for the competition I set up, then that's what
happens ;)

I know not to overestimate the efforts typical ShadowRN listmembers put
into net.projects, but still, I had expected a bit more...

Two and a half months ago, I started a little adventure competition (those
with short memory spans, see
http://plastic.dumpshock.com/adventurecompetition.html) with a deadline for
31 August, 2001. Since that was during my vacation, I extended it by about
a week, thinking this should give everyone who'd expressed an interest in
entering enough time to complete their adventure and send it to me.

When I got back home, I had exactly _one_ entry waiting for me. So I
decided to give it some more time, but still, nothing. With one adventure,
there's obviously no competition -- which would save me and two others a
lot of work judging this, I'll grant you that, but it is disappointing
nonetheless.

So here's the deal: the deadline has been extended until 10 October 2001.
That's exactly one week from now; I think that should give anyone who's
started writing an adventure but not finished it (a syndrome I know all too
well, but still) time to complete it and send it to me. We might still have
a competition after all...

I would love to compete. I, however, do not have enough computer savvy
to include everything that is need for the adventure.
"Maps and other necessary pictures may be separate files, but should be
GIFs, JPEGs or TIFFs of good
quality and not overly large file size. These
must be included in the same
compressed file (zip can compress multiple
files into one zip file, but if
using gzip please tar all the files first,
then gzip the tarfile).
If RTF format is used, the pictures
can be included in the RTF file. Please
do not also include the same
picture separately, as that will only
needlessly enlarge the eventual
file size. "
I do not understand all the lingo here.

I have multiple original stories and runs to my credit and am a published
writer, so the writing is a cinch.

Any suggestions?
Holly

Naming graphic file extensions. Paint uses BMP and tends to get large in
size when detailed. JPG and GIF etc are higher quality images without taking
up as much room.

These

Zip file. Just go to say winzip.com Download and install winzip. Now select
a bunch of files you want to put in a zip. Once selected right click and
choose add to zip :)

RTF I imagine is like a word document which unlike wordpad/notepad allows
you to place images onto the page alongside text.

Please

Basically If you embed the image into say a word document there's no need to
send the actual image file as well (it's in the page after all) simply a
request that if an image is placed into the page do not send it as well
seperately (the image file that is)

No the explanations are fine. I just do not have the know how to create
on computer images of maps, which are essential to the contest.

Don't suppose you live in an area where stores allow you to scan pictures to
files on a drive? If so buy some graph paper do up your maps then get them
scanned. Or look for the cracked version of Paint Shop Pro v.4.12 (or
better) and try to re-create the maps as best as possible.

Somehow I think they're looking more for the guts of the adventure more so
than your ability to draw scale room drawings ;)

So don't be afraid to crack open paint and try your hand that way :)

You don't _need_ maps at all -- if you write the adventure so that it
doesn't require specific maps, you're OK. I mean, there's no real need to
give a map of, for example, a bar, an alley or a beach if an encounter is
set in those, because when/if it becomes necessary the GM can easily
improvise them.

If you do need a map, you can draw one in any image editor, even Windows
Paint if you're desperate. The contest won't be judged on the presentation
but on the content, so if you've got a rough and basic, but functional, map
that shows everything the GM needs to know, that's fine.
