Subject: Allergies and Cyberware: What the Rules Say
Date: Sat, 27 Feb 93 08:38:00 CST
Greetings!
Well, in an attempt to clear up some of this controversy over allergies
and cyberware, I went and looked it up. The following quote is from the SR
first edition, page 52, in the ALLERGIES section.

SUBSTANCES

Iron refers to any ferrous metal, such as steel or any variety of steel
alloys. This makes the use of most weapons and firearms hazardous to the
metahuman.

Plastic refers to all synthetic materials. A metahuman with such an
allergy could not use most ballistic armour or Cyberware.

Silver is the mystic lunar metal. This allergy makes some jewelry
hazardous.

Sunlight refers to natural light. Beings who are allergic to sunlight are
also allergic to X-rays.
[end of quote]

As you can see, an allergy to silver is not that big of a deal. An allergy
to PLASTIC, however, is what would make cyberware hazardous. My gaming group
has not had many metahumans, so problems with allergies have not been a big
deal. I would probably allow the person to buy hypoallergenic items, but cost
would be increased by a LOT, depending on just what sort of item they want.

Also, be aware that this is from SR I rules. I don't know what sort of
changes were made to allergies in SR II, but I think most of the rules on
them would be similar.
