I'm a bit confused about allergies. On page 46 of SR2 it says "a
metahuman character can be given an allergy during character creation."
Does this mean that a metahuman can have only one allergy? They don't
say this explicitly, but it seams to be implied.

My dictionary says that "an" means "one."

You can have as many allergies as you like. But when someone's allergic
in my game, it *HURTS*! One is probably too many :-)

Just think about a character with Severe allergy to Plastic. How many
non-plastic toilet seats are there in 2056 anyway? ;-) Okay, it doesn't
hurt in combat...except second-degree burns from the last time you had to
go potty in a hurry count as +1 for distraction at least!

And they're talking about polyethylene condoms.... OUCH!

Okay, British lavatorial humour at its best, but there's more to life
than dice rolls...

It's not that clear; I use the SR1 rule that a metahuman _must_ have an
allergy, though I wouldn't stop anyone from taking more than one (especially
if they need Attribute points... right Carsten?)

The ruling i usually see and use myself is one allergy which is
optional and gives one column of modifiers off both the tables.
This come virtually every time to a moderate common allergy for +4
attribute point as metahumans never have enough of these. Note that
if you put e in atts with the more metahumans rules you can actually
gain for being metahuman C, atts E over Hunam E, atts C as you get +
4 for allergy and +3 for being metahuman a gross of 2 better than the
human!!!! (one reason i always play meta at 'A', as then people play
metahuman for the roleplaying not power, i still see elves plenty!)

Enforcing all metahuman have an allergy is fine if you want to.

More than one allergy, well no one ever suggested it but that leaves
you very open to abuse by power gamers, ok if your players are good
go for it but be very careful you don't completely ruin your
character or end up far better than average due to piles of bonuses
with carefully non annoying disadvantages.

This is a point that took me prety long to fully comprehend, but I
think I got it now:) Thanks to Gurth and our PBM - his views were
highly enlightening. So to answer your question yes its allowed
to take more than one, that does not mean however that your
GM sould/would let you get XXX tons of allergies.
