When reading thru the background of the shadowrun world, I
always wondered what it would be like to live in the times
leading up to that era - to see corporations like Renraku
(that deal in everything from entertainment to computer software/
hardware to whatever) form from smaller chunks.

And then I see that WotC has bought out TSR. So, if someone
like, say, Microsoft ends up purchasing WotC, do you think
we'd be seeing the first of the true Megacorporations?

Just a thought. :-)

Take a look at Sony. They own a huge chunk of Hollywood and IIRC a lot
of property within the United States and Europe. Petroleum companies
like Exxon have huge investments abroad.

These corporations may not have the direct political control like they
do in the SR Universe expressed through such things as
extraterritoriality, but they have God Awfully powerful lobbies here in
the US and I'm sure their money talks in other countries too.

The Megacorp thing is a lot more real than I would like to consider :)

Wouldn't it tho? :) Couldn't you see Bill Gates the first evil
megacorporate owner hiring shadowrunners to take out those little peons
that write the "Windows for Dummies" books. I can smell a campaign now!

A scary one at that... Can you imagine what would happen if the people
behind Windows were to design the games we play...? ;)

I can see it now! Shadowrun '99. It will be harder and slower to play, take
up more room on your bookshelf, and be totally incompatible with any other
game you own.

The marketing hype will be fantastic though...

What?! You've never heard of Ted Turner? Wow, I'm gonna have to move
over there just to get away from the bum. Turner, for those of you fortunate
enough to have never heard of him, is the man responsible for TBS, TNT and
other communication companies, as well as the owner of the Atlanta Braves.
(Baseball) He also scored major points with Vietnam Vets when he married Jane
Fonda, an American who posed in Hanoi Anti-aircraft guns during said war. Well,
let me just tell you, I may be just the slightest bit impartial about this guy,
since I hate his guts. But I truely think you are one of the luckiest men on
Earth, having never heard of him.

TNT? Oh, that's available on satalite and cable over here, but the VAST
majority of us brits don't have cable or satalite.....

Why do americans think we have it good because we don't know who Turner is?

We have our own versions.

Robert Maxwell (May he rest in pieces) and Rupert Murdock sound just as bad,
if not worse.....

Ted gets covered by Shadowrun. In Shadowbeat, he is described as a major
philanthropist. He uses CNN as the basis for a media network dedicated
to exposing the truth and funded by an untouchable trust fund. This
network then becomes a bastion of the people in their fight against
megacorporate oppression. Pretty amusing.

Well, that's the beta. They'll release MSShadowrnNT a year later, which
will actually work, but everyone will already have bought '99 by then.

When/where did you hear this? I haven't heard anything about it.
Hartford's moving at the end of the season, but they're most likely going to
Minnisota or Nashville. I never knew Atlanta was looking for a team. Is Turner
trying for an expansion? That should be coming up in a few years from now, so
that would be the earliest I can think of Atlanta getting hockey. Not that
hockey has any buisness in a state that never sees ice naturally, IMHO.

That sort of thing is happening right now. Anti-trust
laws and lack of truly aggresive leadership in
current corporations seem to be the only limiting
factors right now. Companies like Coca-Cola and
Proctor and Gamble come to mind...

Nah, not enough spread. Although the two companies
have large markets, they are selective markets. Now
if Microsoft were to pick up some heavy industries, a
fast-food chain, and an airline...

The Gulf War was what made CNN _really_ big, yep. Suddenly almost
everybody got it on cable, and where I live it's not been taken off since.
Kinda handy to get up to date on what's happening in the world while I'm
eating breakfast, but apart from that I hardly watch it.

That'd still be small compared to Time-Warner, Turner, Westinghouse,
RJR-Nabisco, Seimens and many other conglomerates. Sure Microsoft is
huge, but neither WotC nor TSR belongs in a serious corporate
discussion.

As for my take on WotC buying TSR, Mr. Adkinson is pretty close with
the folks at TSR and I'm thinking that the buyout is really just him
saving them. Kinda like the White Knight protection from takeover
except TSR's just in danger of going out.

I missed that show. I think the only people who didn't get to see
that was some tribe on the amazon and those of us who were there.

Hell, I was there and I saw it. Well, mostly BBC
coverage, actually. Which makes me wonder; what
exactly is Desert Wars? It's probably in Shadowbeat,
but after browsing through it once, I decided a Coke
would go further and be more useful.

It's kind of a big live-fire exercise for the corporate military, staged
in the Sahara; the difference is that two (or more?) corporate armies are
actually fighting each with live ammo other rather than with blanks.

It's also a media event, because the fighting gets broadcast worldwide.

We have a NHL hockey team here in Phoenix. I've only seen ice/snow 2 or 3
times in my entire life (no I don't get out much), and that's when I went up
to Flagstaff. It is very hot and very dry here, and anyone on our citie's
team did not grow up here. Course we get a lot of snowbirds during the
winter...maybe they like to watch hockey. But I do like to play indoor
soccer, which is kind of the same idea (and it indoors - escape the heat).
