Subject: A newbie's question...pls don't shoot

Hi all,

I just thought that I'd put my hoop in the firing
line and ask a question that I couldn't see an
answer to in the FAQ.

Is there a specific reason why this list doesn't
use a simple mail filter in the subject line like
for example [SR] ?

With the huge volumes of mail that this list generates
I am finding that my regular mail is getting flooded in
my inbox.

I note that you use a filter with off topic posts [OT]
but would see a greater relevance to having one for
general posts.

Obviously if there is a reason then please enlighten
me, if not then please consider.

Cheers,
Tim Burke

Aesthetics?

I just set my filter to read the return address. It catches all but
a few. That's also a better way to catch the person mail from ShadowRN
and those pesky letters with an over riding return-to setting.

Why not filter using shadowrn@********.itribe.net, or simply
shadowrn? All the list mail will always come from that address.

Well..there is thing I have not seen in ages..

Now Tim..in ages long past this idea was brought before the
masses..The masses divided into 4 camps..those that liked it..those
that hated it..those that didn't give a hoot one way or the
other..and those who liked to start a fire and them fan the flames..

The battle field was heaped high with the bodies of the fallen and
roasted..ANd in the Even Doc Doom heard enough and it was proclaimed
far and wide that the idea was simply not worth the blood shed..

So that Tim is why there is no prefix to the subject line of the SRN
list..Well..in a nutshell anyway..and without really explaining what
the arguments were..Of course then there were the dinosaurs..they
were always getting in the way..but..that of course is another story

And no I won't tell which camp I belonged to ;)

>Well I'm off to a great start making a

Not to worry..you have a great excuse, "Sorry..I'm new here." ;)
Of course it won't last forever..but take advantage while you can...

Actually, the (OT) thing is something the members put into it directly
themselves, nothing more.

Not really, AFAIK.

Can't you filter on addresses? I don't know how Windows Eudora
Pro Version 4.0 Demo works, but it seems to me that if it can
filter on subject lines, it should also be able to filter on other
parts of the Subject line. I myself use Pegasus for Windows 3.0,
and filter on the text "shadowrn@********.itribe.net" in the To or
Reply-To fields. It works 100% of the time.

The OT thing is added by individual listmembers when they feel
the post has gone off-topic, in order to identify it as such. We had
too many problems with OT posts last year or so, and this is one
of the things that were enforced. Luckily, it works.

I'm against putting [SR] or whatever in the subject line. I see it
on other mailing lists, and I feel it disrupts the Subject line. Lots
of times you'll see things like:

Subject: Re: [SR] Re: [SR] Re: A newbie's question...pls don't
shoot

because some peoples' mailers somehow won't do things
properly...

Such filtering can't be done by my current mail program (netscape
2.0), or by hotmail (shows originator of message, not list, as the
sender, and has no reply-to sort option).
Somethinglike {SR} CAN be appended automatically by the listmailer (the
ED list does this fairly well), but there can be aesthticly annoying
bugs to that. I personally would like it (a LOT), but "tradition (ba
ba), TRADITION" wins out, I'm sure. So I currently subscribe in digest
form to avoid drowning my shared acount. Those digest messages DO have
easily sorted subjects, and are also only 1 per day.

The" 24hr" thing is hard to follow when using digest. Then again, I
just don't respond to [OT] unless I can bring it back on SR subject.

Not if we are reading digests, we can't. I tend to page down very
quickly, but risk missing the next message. More considerate than an
[OT] is simply keeping such posts to a minimum, or sending them
privatetly - there is no real need to archive such stuff. Maybe the
Digest / archive should have a filter? Except then you couldn't archive
any new woodchuck questions. :)

Well, the "Fidler on the Roof" refrence was intentional and fitting. :)
I agree- using such a massive mail list as ShadowRN requires some
talent and adaptation on the users part, but making it more "user
friendly" would also be nice. I'm lucky, and can upgrade my software
soon, if not my ISP. Not everybody can, although most longtime users
seem to find something that works.
If you have ANY sort of filter, you can make a SR folder and toss the
messages from the top ten or so posters in it (convieniently, they all
bought shirts), and hence have minimal non-sr messages else-where.
