All this makes the spell an effective tool if used in open spaces or when
the shaman doesn't want to go anywhere, but not a handy choice in most
buildings.

Any thoughts?

I'm getting in to this discussion a little late, but it seems we are
talking about sighting problems with respirators & gas masks, no?

Currently frontline troops have available, but rarely used passive
IR/thermographic optics that attach to the lenses of the M17 family of
gas masks. These are to be used with the "hotspot" laser aiming devices
that can be connected to a variety of weapons. Hotspot projects a
sighting point, calibrated to the weapons "battle zero", on to the
target, which can be set to either visible (red dot) or IR (appears as a
white dot in the optics & invisible to unaided vision). The idea is to
allow the troop to employ the weapon with out having to compensate for
sight picture missalignment caused by the bulk of the mask.

Presently I know of only a very few special ops units who make use of
this, even though it is not a restricted use system, and is available
for general issue.

In what way am I "wrong" here? You can make any modern ammo into a belt,
given belt links of the right size.

Even though the player is asking for "light pistol ammo", the character is
asking for ".22 F

All of the other notes on this subject assume on big thing.
Once you've had your data wiped and your hardware burned you just buy
some replacement hardware parts and recover the back-ups.

Even assuming that your backups are OK, whose going to pay for the
replacement parts ? The moneys in the bank. So is the virus, say
bye-bye to your current bank balance.
I know, I'll pay by credit card. So you use their card machine,
which sends the data via th matrix. Say hello to th virus again.
Even if you get the order through you'll find that the hardware
company can't supply you. Their stock catalogue and their records of
whether you've paid or not are gone.
Oh yes, then there's the delivery companies route planner.....

With a crash that big even the most basic tasks can become very
difficult.

The way the investing appears to work (as far as I have been able to
determine in character) is that the Insect Shaman creates the anchor
point and places the Insect Spirit larva into it. Depending on how
much effort the shaman put into it (Target number and Drain) the
larva then consumes it's hosts essence at a varying rate until it
reaches it's full force and the host has no essence left. It then
hatches.

This can be considered consistent with SR, especially if you know
about ED. I know only a little about ED and I know that a little
knowledge can be a dangerous thing, but here goes.
In ED everything has a True Pattern. This pattern creates the
physical body. In magical terms you could say that it is a mold
which shapes the energy of creation (etheric ?) which then is
perceived on the physical plane as the body.
(AFAIK that is how IE's work, they have strenghtened their
True Pattern so that it no longer ages.)
When the insect spirit starts consuming it's host it also starts
consuming the hosts true pattern.
If it succeeds completely then the host is completely destroyed and a
true-form emerges. If it doesn't succeed completely then the closer
it gets the more the true pattern reflects the insect nature, and the
closer the visible body becomes to an insect.
This ties in with the summoning table on Page 102 of the 2nd
Grimoire.

I know that this ties in with the debate on Auras and Astral bodies
from earlier. I'm going to add to the debate that this is a Game,.
not RL and that to a certain extent they are trying to make SR and ED
internally consistent. I don't know who FASA are doing this in house
but hopefully they can be drawn out into giving an answer.

better planned and much closer run thing against an some

That works, to a degree if a similar package were developed for a
submarine, though I still think you would need a better stealth system to
create the same effect, perhaps using RAM as well except designed to fool
sonar.

If they stopped it that quick, I'd rule there was no damage done. I
doubt the spirit had time to really do any damage. The "victim" might
have some nightmares about bug for awhile, but that's as far as it would
probably go. But basically, because as you said before, the rules are a
bit nebulous, your GM is free to do pretty much whatever.

That pretty much they way I read it as well. I always sort of envisioned
the process something like that episode from Battlestar Galactica
"Carrylon", if anyone remembers that one.

Yup, very dangerous since, basically, there is no official link between
ED and SR. Sure, lots of crossovers in novels, and those pesky IEs, and a
number of other things (even found an ED Axe in the Denver Boxed Set), as
well as vague references. And sure, the two have lots of similarities and
it just screams "connection" to most of us, but officially there is none.
Some of the stuff in ED and SR may have been written with the same ideas
in mind, but which is which is a guess cause there is no official word.
That said...

The other way around: without Combat Pool, you can't go into full defense
(i.e. trying to make the attacker miss you) per SRII rules. Anyone can
counter-attack, even those without Unarmed Combat skill, simply by
defaulting from something else, but full defense isn't an option if you
don't have Combat Pool or a Threat Rating.
