Subject: Another question about Boosted Reflexs
Date: Mon, 14 Aug 1995 13:24:26 +0200
There is currently (in our group) a debate going around as to whether
boosted reflexs are replaceable with the betaware equivilent. Now
according to the book the boosted reflexs is a one off electro-
chemical treatment. But looking at the provided diagram, there is
obvious wire and other parts displayed. In our campaign we assume
that there are still components placed within the body. After all,
otherwise, they are indectable to cyberware scanners in airports etc,
mages could pick them up as they would seem to be of some essence
draining creature.

The argument go as such, boosted reflexs releases a tailored drug
into the users system. The character them becomes addicited to the
said drug (chemical). Now the drug because it is being produced as
part of the character metabolism is unique ie a designer person
specific drug. Now if the character tries to upgrade the boosted,
obviously the tailored drug changes, but because the character is
addicted to the previous drug, he/she/it goes into a spasm and dies,
becomes a nutcase or whatever the case. But in upgrading the
components to betaware, the drug is still being produced by the users
metabolism.

This argument gets past the case of having them removed. They are
still there. They are not being upgraded as we assume that the
terminology means going from 1 to 2, etc...

Any comments..

I'd say no. My reasoining being that a beta grade bit of cyber is not just
an improved version of the older bit, it's a new type of cyber. It's an
experimental cyberware, which has the same effect on the user, for less
Essence. This doesn't mean that it relies on the exact same principle or
technology. A beta grade version of boosted reflexes may well use a different
drug to achieve the same effect for less Essence. The drug would be more
powerful, more efficient, or whatever. The method of use or emplacemt may be
superior. But the drug itself by no means needs to be the same drug. You
could reason that, even if the drug was the same, that the beta version used
less of it by placing it more strategically within the body, and using it
more effeciently. This reduction in drug input would have adverse affects on
the user. And, anyway, as far as the rules go, I'd count going from normal
to beta grade as an upgrade, fits my definition.

OTOH, one could allow it, but require some other side effect. Such as even
_more_ nuyen. Or more chance of Essence loss. Or a substitute drug to be
taken regularily. Or a certain surgen who is the one most skilled in the
implantation of such 'wares...
