Here's a link to a newspaper story about a portable credit card
reader. I've always felt that small, portable devices with matrix uplinks
should be commonplace in Shadowrun. Maybe SanFran can use this to bring
back their plan to allow panhandlers to take credit cards...

Wasn't it the Bay area, a year or three back, that wanted to give credit
card readers to panhandlers/beggars? The idea was that, with most ATM's
only dispensing yuppie food stamps ($20 bills), people would be more likely
to give. It was, naturally, shot down by those with a clue. Drifting
further off-topic, isn't it a shame how people who have their hearts in the
right place damage their cause by doing something on the extreme side and
getting both them and their cause branded as wackos?
(And bringing it back to the original topic after that bit of flame-bait)

Occasionally I hear people on this list mentioning paying their PC's off in
fake credsticks. I suppose if the runners are stupid enough not to check
them at the table they get what they deserve, but wouldn't some sort of
portable reader such as mentioned in the article be commonplace?

SR3 pg238. "Credsticks can also transfer funds not listed in the
financial networks, but they must be connected to the matrix from time to
time to register those transactions."

Basically any REAL credstick (the kind with ID) can transfer funds to
another stick. The next time it's slotted in a reader it just uploads the
offline debit or credit along with the current one.
It's very similar to PayPal actually. You can get this for Palm OS. I
can beam you $20 and you can send back $5, but until we both hotsync and
hookup to the network, no real money has actually exchanged hands.
