Subject: A not-so brief intro

I wrote this as an introduction to SR for a person who's never
played an RPG and doesn't have access to any of the books, (niether did I
when I wrote this for that matter). How complete is this? Can I get some
opinions on this?

[Intro]
Picture Seattle and the surrounding area (Tacoma, Redmond, and the other
subdivisions) as one giant city state called the Seattle Metroplex.
Surrounding the Seattle Metroplex is are the NANs (Native American Nations).
The NANs were formed during the Indian uprising when the government allowed
private corporation to extract the natural resources that remained. The
Native Americans fought back the only way they could... with guns, bows and
arrows, and MAGIC. After a tense 2 year war, the American Government gave in
the the Indians' demands when the NANs used the most powerful weapon in
their arsenal, The Great Ghost Dance. The Ghost Dance caused cataclysmic
events across the US included unusual, violent weather storms and the
simultaneous eruption of Mt Hood, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Rainer.
After the withdrawal of most Anglos from the Western US (all territory west
of Texas, except California, Seattle, and Denver), the world began to focus
on something new. Along with the return of magic came the return of Elves
and Dwarves.
After the general stir caused by these meta-humans, the world faced another
shock. The Crash of 2029.
Once the world had achieved a global communications net, the system was
struck by a virus. It crashed systems left and right at an exponential rate.
The only ones able to stop it was a group of military hackers called Echo
Mirage. What gave Echo Mirage the edge over the virus was the full simulated
sensory immersion into the computer system. The team was able to become one
with their computers. But being part of the system came at a price. After
the first 12 minutes of engaging the virus, half the team was dead but the
virus was destroyed.
After the Crash, the corporations began recovering, and exceeding, their old
research. Some included research into advanced prosthetics which included
use of the simulated sense technology used by Echo Mirage. Now cybernetic
limbs can help accident victims regain their lost arms and legs, complete
with felling.
The final act in this timeline is the emergence of Orks and Trolls. Suddenly
and without warning, one out of every 10 humans "Goblinized" into the
creatures of myth and legend.
And now, just what is a Shadowrun? A Shadowrun is a covert job done by
Shadowrunners. Shadowrunners are people that don't exist in any database,
corp or governement. Because they don't exist, various groups hire them as
deniable assests for covert jobs against targets. Shadowrunners are hired to
do anything, and usually they do it... for a price.
Care to run the shadows?

Times are a bit off here. First, the resource rush happened (government
sponsored raping of the land) which kicked off the SAIM (a native american
terrorist group). In 2009, anyone connected to SAIM at all (and later the
majority of native americans) was put into an internment camp. 2 years
later (Dec 24, 2011) came the return of magic (below) and this started the
war with the indians. The GGD happened in 2017 and the Treaty of Denver
(formalizing the NAN) was signed on 2018.

> Along with the return of magic came the return of Elves

Yes, but the return of magic was before the formation of the NAN and the
GGD. 2011 marked the year magic started creeping into society with Elves
and Dwarves being born. On or before Dec 24, 2011 mana levels became high
enough for dragons to awaken and spells to be cast and/or spritis to be
sommoned. Daniel Howling Coyote and others either used barrier/armor
spells or spirits with some kind of protection power to break out of the
internment camps on that day; Ruymyo (an eastern dragon) was sighted that
day as well.

IIRC, Dec 24, 2011 was the date that archiologists had determined the Aztec
calendar pointed at as the end of the world (really, the birth of a new
world) when SR1 was published. [I think they've re-calculated the date to
something else...]

Actually, the first Echo Mirage team was quickly overwhelmed because they
didn't think outside the box enough to deal with the psychological effects
of decking. Then, they brought in mavericks from the private sector and 32
survived a brutal training process.

It was after 18 minutes, and it was only 3 or 4 members. It took until
2031 to completely erradicate the virus and by then only 7 members were
left.

Actually, cybertechnology and decking techonology are both variant of ASIST
techonolgy which hit the steets in the early 2020s. By 2025, the NFL
started allowing players to get cyber-enhancements.

Actually, this happened before the crash of 2029, in April of 2021.

I wouldn't define a Shadowrun in terms of shadowrunners. There's a really
good definition in SR2, but I don't have that book next to me. Basically,
it's any quasi-legal or illegal action (or series of actions) undertaken
for pay. Shadowrunners an have various backgrounds and skills and don't
have a real common denominator ('cept perhaps a disregard for the law).
They might have a day job and/or thier original SIN might still exist in
databases 'round the world. They could have grown up in the barrens and
never had a SIN but, SINless != Shadowrunner. Often, shadowrunners will
have multiple SINs in the system, but none will have their real
information. [Pun: The more you shadowrun the more SINs you gotta deal with
:)]. Sahdowrunners are people that accept shadowruns.

Looks good to me. It's not too long (which makes people skip it unless you
write well enough to really grab their attention) and it includes most of the
important stuff from the setting's background and history. There's of course
always stuff that you can improve or add, but on the whole, IMHO it should
work pretty well for giving someone a quick idea of what the SR setting is
about.

If this is intended for someone who's never played an RPG,and has little or no
idea of what they're like, then I think you may want to add a little bit at
the end about what an RPG is. But don't make it long -- certainly not as long
as the text you already have. One paragraph should be more than enough,
because it's my experience that the more you tell people about RPGs, the less
likely they are to actually want to play one. In short, the more you say, the
more stupid RPGs look :)

Not bad. However, the "And So It Came To Pass" chapter of the Shadowrun 3e
Core Rulebook is online, so directing them to that is the perfect way to
get them started. There they truly get to see how the world has gone to
hell in a handbasket.

True, but I prefer the Second Ed intro. It just seemed more thorough, kinda
like a text book. This verson (3rd ed) seems to me to be a tad lacking. It
touches on everything, but it doesn't fully explain them (like how the
Trucker Riots in New York, 1999, allowed corps to use deadly force to
protect their assests.)

Oh, and Gurth, the person I wrote this for does does know about RPGs, she's
just never played one before.

Except that it's _far_ too long to give to someone who's only casually
interested, and who you're hoping to draw into the game. The less they have
to read, the better. Maybe a comic version of ASICTP would work best? :)

In that case, you don't need the explanation, no :) My experience is that most
people that texts like the one you wrote are written for, don't know what an
RPG is at all, so that's why I mentioned it.
