Subject: Anything like a PAN in ShadowRun?
Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 21:23:15 +0000
Is there any thing like a PAN in ShadowRun or should I just make it myself? A
PAN is like a LAN or WAN, but more limited, Personal Area Network. Go to the
place below if you need to know more. Basically it transfers information
through the human body, instead of wires and things. Currently, it's like a
2,400 baud modem, with, theoretically, the potential to go up to 400,000 baud.
Anyone see anything like this, should I implement it or are there reasons not
to? Thanks.

No but I checked it out and the idea is truly freaking and mind boggling.
I"m still having trouble digesting what I just read. But if we get this
technology off the ground soon everything in all of the cybergenre games
are going to become obsolete overnight. Who needs a datjack when you can
transmit info through your skin.

a) PANs have a fairly high error rate, so that you need a lot of error
checking.
b) You'll want a machine/brain interface of some sort, to interpret neural
signals into digital signals, and vice-versa. This still needs to be in your
brain, and a datajack to plug directly into would be easier.

Yeah, it's a really neat sounding technology, but it's an iffy concept at
best... many of the proposed uses have alternatives which are also
effective.

I had a look at it as well, but I don't think it is going to
kill over the cyber genre. The amount of data throughput you will need
for a VR Matrix link will be much higher than the 400kbps quoted as
being the theoretical upper limit for PAN data transfer.
It does however make information passing very interesting.
People could brush up against one another at a bar or on a bus for a
second or two and a lot of information could be passed. Imagine getting
a job from your Johnson that way.
It might make for an interesting plot hook...

cheers
Geoff

Oh well, remember the time people said that 2400baud was the physical
maximum for modems?

And it makes you paranoid as hell. Who says the two over there didn't just
pass a contract. Maybe they're no wageslaves, but mages...

Oh, and data transmitted to the wrong person...<egmg>
