polycarbonate security glass. :)

What do you mean _now_ available? I was pretty sure that this technology
has been available for years - the news story seems to be saying that
what's different is that Mercedes hasn't offered this in America before.
I seem to remember also that this kind of work was often done
aftermarket by companies who specialize in auto armoring. I've don't
remember ever seeing an automaker offer this.

Pretty cheap, tho...

BMW offers a 540i with protection packet against small
arms (up to .44 IIRC).

BMW offers armored versions of many of their normal cars, IIRC.
