Ok, ok....
First off, I'm the gm! So you are not spoiling anything.
Second: It's the Chinese Adept in the group (doesn't everybody have
one?) and his Katana vs bugs. When we played the first bug city
adventure last week I only used half of the armour value of the true
form beetle they were fighting. I don't know if this is correct. I
can't seem to find such a rule in the S3 book... But a Katana must be
better at cutting thing than for example a club.

BTW: Bug City is a wonderful book! You should see the look on the
faces of the players when they first encountered a bug!!

My advise help him get his hands on a weapon focus. Then you won't need
to flub the rules. And in oure game at least true form beetles take on
citymasters and chargeing semies with little to no problem. Don't look
at it as a soft carapice. Think of it as a magically hardend armor.

Oh yes.. I remember the true form that chewed me into itty bitty bits.

If its just a normal old katana (not a wepon focus), he'll have to
engage it as he would any spirit. That may mean his big ass katana skill
won't help at all (per SR2, rolling willpower), or he won't hurt it even if
he does manage not to get pasted (per SR3, using normal combat and "immunity
to normal weapons"). If he's using a wepon focus, they don't get immunity
to normal wepons, and the attack is conducted normally. In any case, Bug
Spirits often have physical armor, which would provide them some protection
against ANY attack.
There is NO reason to adjust the armor just because he is using a
katana. Its power is better than a club (str +3 vs str+1), and it does
physical dmage, not stun (handy, since most of your friends are likely also
doing physical damage). Halving the armor is a massive bonus, and theres no
reason to do it. A katana may be better at cutting, but a club will leave a
nasty mark.
On the other hand, you might want to let them catch on that spraying a few
"coats" of insecticide "paint" on thier melee wepons will let them
utilize
the Bugs "vulnerabilty"- that would mean that they at least don't get the
immiunity to normal wepons effect, and may take extra damage.

Sounds like you did a good job building it up, if you got that kind of
response. Have a "blast". ;-)

In that case, I'll say they're just as effective against insect spirits as
against other spirit types, but keep in mind that true forms get
additional armor from their shells.

BTB, no, it's not correct -- the spirit would have gotten its full armor
value. For a true form, male beetle spirit, call it Force 4, that'd be 16
points! (Force 4 females get 12 points, mothers also have 16...)

SR doesn't count edged weapons as armor-piercing, unlike some other games
(Cyberpunk 2020, for example -- maybe you're confusing it with that?)

That's why it's always nice to use an adventure like Queen Euphoria or
Missing Blood on players who've never encountered insect spirits before :)
