Joe:
]A little aside on the SR-71 - I remember seeing a clip in a documentary once
]where they said that (as of 1989) the SR-71 had been attacked by the Soviets
]over one thousand times with no successes. Supposedly, one of the Soviet
]ground to air missiles was specifically designed for the Blackbird, and
]still no kills.

If I remember the model right (and, likely, Rat will correct me whether or not
I need it) the Mig-25 Foxbat was designed around the idea of intercepting the
SR-71 Blackbird before it could launch a nuclear device (yes, Virginia, it _is_
nuke capable). I guess that's success, when people start making toys just to
kill _you._

Yes, you are correct about the SR-71 being nuke capable. It was designed to
carry a "one megaton device." Why else would it have
"Strike/Stragegic" in
it's designation? :-)

But you're wrong about the Foxbat. The MiG-25 was designed to take out the
B-70 and B-1 bombers--it's little more than a cockpit and two engines with
a couple of missile hardpoints on it. At the time the US thought that the
Soviets were developing the next generation of air superiority fighter, and
they countered with the F-15 Eagle. Then a Foxbat pilot defected, put his
a/c down in Japan, and the USAF had a bit of egg on their collective faces
when they found out just what they were so afraid of :-).
