Subject: Astral Shadows?

Ok, the subject line is slightly misleading, as I know what astral shadows
are. However, there is a rather odd question here...

First off, do real shadows exist on the Astral? As in, trhose dark
silloettes that we cast when light hits us? I'd assume not, but am just
wondering...

Now, the reason I'm asking this has to do with a book series I'm currently
reading, Edding's Belgariad. In it, several of the Sorcerer-types actually
detach their shadows, and place their consciuosness in them, allowing them
to travel great distances at high speeds and cause general mayhem... It
sorta seems a lot like Astral Projection, except that it's purely physical.

So my question is this: What do you all think of a spell that does this?
Allows the magician to "project" his Shadow, and effectively astrally
project through physical means. He'd be unable to affect anything, or even
cast spells, and he wouldnot be able to see astrally or effect astral
things. It would just be another way to travel. But, not being astrally
active would have advantages as well.

The reason it's not astrally active is that, as I mentioned above, I don;t
think that there are true shadows in Astral Space, so...

Just one of those random thoughts that occurs in the wee hours of the
night...:]

PS: DId this make ANY sense at all? i hope so...;]

I'd say no, at least not like shadows caused by absence of light. In
those areas of the astral where there isn't much life (or shielded,
like a closed bunker) then they would be dark(er). I don't view
astral space as having shadows with hard edges. All IMHO.

Um.. sorta. Shadows don't have a "presence" per se (as far as I
know). I would allow a spell that gives a person's shadow a presence
and then allows the mage to transfer his life force to that
presence.

So, the effect you want could be accomplished. I'm just coming at it
from a different angle.

Bull, you always make sense. We just may not understand you ;)

Ack. I've always been very, very tough on spells that produced that
kind of effect. I know, I know, it's not exactly the holy grail of
SR spells (i.e. Teleportation), but it's close. As I understand it,
the soul, when departing the body, goes immediatly to the astral
plane, without, ever, going to the physical plane. So, I guess,
such a spell would have to circumvent that basic universal rule. But
then again, it seems FASA has a fancy with mundanes who can go to the
astral (you know what I'm talkin' about, not to spoil anything). So
maybe the reverse is true.

(BTW, I've always hated that idea. Mundanes are mundanes. That's it.
They should'nt be able to visit the planes.)

Then again. Spirits (who are astral beings) seem to be able to manifest on the
physical plane...Wait...Maybe some kind of "Manifest" power for mages
(spells or otherwise)... Like spirits...Hey...A scary question: Can
astrally projecting mages be banished? Are they considered spirits?
Can they be controlled via a True Name? Summoned?

Heyheyhey...*evil GM grin*
