Hoi Chummer:

Yea I know, I'm starting to sound like a broken record in defending
my ignorance, but please, I am trying to use my new found love for the German
language. It is perhaps the most enjoyable language I have had yet. I
took Spanish for a year in high school, and didn't learn nearly half as
much as I have learned in my German-I and II classes. Please be a little
understanding at least I am trying to learn a language other than english,
which too many U.S. citizens believe everyone should speak. ;^{)

Hai, soo desu! That is the same reason that I am learning Japanese. I
believe if more Americans knew another language, there would be less
ignorance and prejudice, IMHO.

Well, IMHO, in America, everyone should be able to speak English, unless
you live in the French-speaking areas of Canada, or down in Mexico or
places further south. OTH, in Japan, you should be able to speak Japanese.

'Course, we could just shortcut the whole procedure and learn Esperanto.

Well we're at it, let's also make D.C. perto Rico, and those other
territories that we tax without representation states.

I am trying to learn Italian (or rather regain what I have sort of forgotten),
and I would eventually like to learn German or French. Or both

Puerto Rico doesn't want to be a state. They had an election in November.
D.C. is basically the inner-city area of the Washington metropolitan
area. No other inner-city (or whole city) is its own state.

And the citizens of DC have to pay taxes, yet have zero say in their
government (no senators or representatives with voting privs). There was
a U.S. revolution about that back in 1776.

Well, D.C. is the District of Columbia: basically, not quite a state, but
a glorified territory. The whole district is composed of "inner city",
and, in fact, some portions of it are quite beautiful and historic. It
does have its dense urban areas, but, then again, so does Rhode Island...

The Washington-metro area is a nice loose term created by the weather and
traffic reporters to determine their "coverage." It's roughly from DC's
center out north to Laytonsville in MD and down south to maybe Burke and
Lorton in VA.

(SR's FDC absorbed it all..)

Yup. The figureheads chosen to "lead" the movement towards New Columbia,
Jesse Jackson and Elanor Holmes-Norton, have done a truly bang up job
representing the cries of those crushed by DC's outrageous property and
commuting taxes. Great job.

The last vote in Congress was about 3 to 1... against.

You'd think the killers would be the ones PAYING taxes...

Are they citizens of DC or Maryland? Is DC really excluded?

Strikes me as foolish, but then again I claim allegiance with a nation that
every time a Cabinet fails to pass a law, the government falls and *gasp*
re-elections!

I am assuming [I know, I know] you are talking about the citivens of D.C.
- Yes in order that no state be shown favoritism the citizines of D.C.
are not citizens of any state but rather the district..It is all a little
confusing but done for a good reason...

If you guys don't like the way it's done some place, either make a stand
and do some changing or move to someplace, in or out of the U.S. you can
live with.
