Subject: auto fire & suppressive fire

All this discussion about high fire rates lets me think that SRII ( SRI as
well ) rules are very imprecise about automatic fire. So this is what we do
here about it :

There are 4 different types of firearms capable of automatic fire :
- machine pistols
- SMGs
- assault rifles
- Machineguns, Miniguns, and basically heavy automatic weapons.

there are also 4 fire "rates" :
- single shot
- short burst on 1 target
- long burst on 1+ target
- suppressive fire.

In order to simplify the TN modifiers for autofire, we decided to use
"standard" fire rates ( that is, number of bullets in the burst ) :

weapon single shot short burst long burst supp. fire
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
machine pistol NA 3 8 8
SMG NA 3 8 10
Assault rifles 1 3 (10) (12)
Machinegun NA NA 10 16
Minigun NA NA 12 20

Note that NA indicates that the weapon use usually forbids such ROF. The (10)
for long burst/AR indicates that some AR are not allowed to use long burst or
suppressive fire modes ( either single-shot, or short burst ).

Now for the rules : single shot are pretty straightforward ( use the SRxx
rules ). Short burst add +3 to power, but nothing to wound category ( for SRI,
+1 power, +1 staging ).
Long Burst are either on 1 target or more. On 1 target, add +(LB ROF) to power
and +1 to wound categ., +2 if MG or Minigun ( SRI, add +3 power, +2 staging,
and +1 wound categ. ). On 2-3 targets, use short burst damage rules on each
target. More than 3 targets is considered as suppressive fire.

Suppressive fire is special. I thank Chris Siebenmann for his recent post and
the idea included ( TN modifiers ).
Suppressive fire is against a zone, so no TN modifiers for moving targets
and such ( TN 4 basically ). Recoil mods are halved BEFORE applying recoil
compensation. the gunner rolls a success test, and the results are ( for each
person in the zone ) : either take a TN mod for actions equal to (ROF/3), or
take a short burst wound that must be reduced through normal procedure.

Either way, any target in the fire zone will end up with either high TN or
less combat dice in the pool...or a wound.

The width of the zone must be less than or equal to (ROF/2) meters.

Note that static weapon mounts ( bipods, tripods, vehicles mounts ) negates
recoil entirely.

Anyone with a smartgun link can "avoid" someone on a long burst, but NOT in
suppressive fire mode ( there's no targeting ). the modifiers for Smartgun,
laser sights, etc... DO NOT apply in suppressive fire mode. In this mode, the
TN is basically 4 in every situation ( not much subtlety... )

Does that seem sensible to all of you ?

Redwing.
