If you're using autofire, you should be using that little "stray shots"
rule tucked somewhere in the back of the combat section.

Full auto is to keep the enemy's head down, not hit him. That's why assault
rifles are autos and battle rifles are semis.

Not with smartguns, they never produce stray shots. The idea about autofire
being used to keep enemies heads down sounds appropriate though. I had an
incorrect impression of the reasons for autofire.

MILLIKEN> Not with smartguns, they never produce stray shots.

That's why you disable the smartlink when you're suppressing an area.

Lots of people have this impression. Assault weapons, literally, are used
to assault a position. Thus you want to keep the defenders' heads down and
not shoot at you, and the easiest way to do that is to put so much high
velocity lead in his general area that he'll keep his head down.

Conversely, a battle rifle is used to defend a position. When defending a
position it is better to kill the enemy than to force him to keep his head
down, so you want a semi-automatic weapon and place your shots.

NO, there are more than one reason to use autofire. One reason, indeed,
is supressive fire like the Rat said. Another reason, especially with a
controllable weapon such as a mini-gun with IGV 3 on all barrels, is to
make very sure your target isn't getting back up. Ever.

Even with an M-16 autofirre was used that way. You see, the M-16, from
actual experience, will put it's whole magazine into one man-sized target
on rock-n-roll. Kinda guarantees that the target ain't gonna ever be a
problem again. Especially when the ranges get short, the shooter really
doesn't want to have to worry about the target being "walking wounded" in
a firefight. Ten rounds Rock-n-roll pretty much guarantees that they
won't be shooting back.
