the list (been busy at work). So I figured, I spit out some thoughts
for comment.
I found myself walking amongst the books of Powells Book store, in
Portland, yesterday and I happened upon an old Shadowrun novel:
Out of the Shadows (?)
It's an oversized collection of short stories by TommyD, Paul Hume,
Nyx etc. I seemed to have missed this book in my quest for The
Collection. <smile> But this simple collection of introductions for
characters we all know and love (or despise <g>) got me thinking.
The book is obviously the first SR Book. The first page is a one page
synopsis of the world 2050. The book stresses the Mayan link of SR
much more heavily than plugs for SR today.
The idea behind the little synopsis is to get you, the reader,
intrigued by the idea of cyber melded with magic.
As I read it, I began to laugh a tad. (Making it a trademarked Vael
giggle, but as it has been pointed out to me, by a person who knows
who they are: a giggle isn't manly, so.. I sniggle(T) now.)
Do you remember the first time you picked up SR1, turned the elegant
Elmore cover around to read: 'The year is 2050; The blending of
technology with human...' and quickly slapped your cash down?
It was intriguing, it was new. FASA couldn't go wrong. Everything
they threw our way, we loved. (Well, I did anyway.)
Then we started throwing in our ideas of how we felt the world of SR
should evolve. It needs to be this way, it needs to be that, I hate
this and I loathe that, but I do happen to like this little tid bit.
Now I'm not saying that consumer interaction and direction are wrong,
I'm simply saying: boy haven't we got picky? <grin>
I know I have. I'm sure that some you have as well.
FASA got the first edition out with out our help, and they did a
fantastic job. Bravo. (1st Edition rules had some problems, but I'm
talking about overall premise.)
This happens to so many things. Take a movie preview: you see the
trailer, and The Premise looks unique and inspiring. Then we watch
The Movie. This is were the problems arise. 'That was nothing like I
thought it was going to be.' 'Man, that movie was great!' 'What?! are
you nuts?'
Damn our human nature! <grin>
Don't you wish everything was always as simple as that first read
through?
I sure do.
Vael (Who's making himself out to be hypocritical (by his above
statements) because he's as guilty as many other people he knows for
bashing FASA's line decisions. <smile>)
