Hey Again,

Another plea for advice/guidance from the quiet guy :)

I've been thinking about moving my to New Orleans, yeah I know, I know,
who cares? Guess after damn near ten years of SR I've finally burned
out on Seattle. ;)

I have been developing my own SR New Orleans history, setting but always
have room for some creative inspiration. Point being:

I was wondering what others who have done this have worked out and if
there are any Net resources about New Orleans in SR (I have one three or
four page doc. but don't remember wher I got it)? I love the city and
have spent a lot of time there, guess I'm a bit of a "Nawlin'sphile,"
and with the rich history (slavery, vodoun, gambling, and the highest
homocide rate in thew country etc.)it seems perfect for SR.

Thanks,

Jim "The Quiet Guy"

If you want my take on New Orleans, head over to Paolo's Archive and
take a gander at "Shadowtourists Guide to New Orleans" I believe it is
in the "places" area.

I have designed several adventures surrounding my version of N.O., and it
works rather well. Let me know if you need anymore help.

regards

Bill

I have some real problems with that guide to New Orleans; specifically with
the way the French Quarter, Organized crime and Voodoo are handled. For one
thing; the population of New Orleans is overwhelmingly Catholic, and fairly
strongly so. This does not prevent the occult bookstores from opening, or
prevent the sham voodoo rituals put on for the tourists, but the concept of
a large group of "devil-working" voodoo practitioners taking over and
controlling the French Quarter (which is incidentaly a site of cultural and
tourist importance so great that the chances of the government allowing the
setup proposed in the "guide" to occur is non-existant) is completely
ridiculous. In addition, the chances that a ban on firearms, magical or
not, as laid out in the article being allowed by the general public in a
state where the concealed carry permit and the firearm permit are one and
the same is sorta silly. Another issue is the treatment of the "king" and
"Queen" of voodoo. Marie Laveau was a very influential figure in the
twenties and her daughter contiinued the tradition, but the whole story was
mainly a shill for the stupid Yank tourists anyway. Voodoo has a
matriarchical structure so the concept of a "King" is rather strange too.
And where did the huge Yakusa influence come from? ever since the mass
italian emigration, in the teens I believe, the city's organized crime has
been tightly controlled by the Mafia. There are more Jewish people in New
Orleans then there are Asians; and that's ALL asians- the Yaks would be like
20 people and the tongs and triads the other 5.
I guess there is noting really "wrong" from a gameplay standpoint with the
data presented in the Shadowtourist article; it's just completely
unrealistic.

White Wolf magazine had a great three issue series detailing New
Orleans. One issue details New Orleans style Voodoun magic (before it
appeared in Awakenings, and I personally like the style as described
in WW better). Another issue contains an excellent adventure set in
the Big Easy that helps introduce the flavor and new rules from the
previous issues.

I'm at work so I can't give you exact issue numbers at the moment. If
no one else is able to come up with them, email me in private and I'll
have them for you when I'm at home.
