I don't expect to see any of the recompiled sourcebooks before February to
August of 99, but who knows, perhaps FASA will surprise me >:).

If I were you, Brian, I'd wait for those, but start snagging location books
while you wait. But I love the location books, each one has so many
adventures waiting to be seen and brought to fuition.

Shadowtech, might be worth picking up if you're impatient to implement
bioware. Rigger 2 and Virtual Realities 2.0 might be something to grab for
the expansive nature of the content. But Cybertechnology, Street Sam
Catalog, Awakenings, and Grimiore 15th Ed, and Fields of Fire will probably
be ones to wait out the new sourcebooks for.

This question can probably only be answered correctly by the folks at
FASA... but I think that the "old" magic books (Awakenings, Grimoire) will
become rather obsolete when Magic in the Shadows comes out (it is due early
next year, I think), and Shadowtech, Street Samurai Catalog, Fields of Fire
and Cybertechnology will be when Man and Machine and the Cannon Companion
come out (scheduled for summer ´99, IIRC), but I think these books are not
even "in production" (as MitS is at the moment, so we´ve heard from Steve
Kenson). It really is time to release new, combined books... Shadowtech is
still a 1st edition book, SSC also (well, they released an updated 2nd ed
version). If I were in your situation, I would wait for MitS, but if I
could pick up cheap copies of the other books... till next summer (or
later, regarding FASA´s announcements in contrast to the REAL release
dates) it is a long time to wait.

Sounds like a good mix. >8-> I actually value Shadowbeat above the
Companion in terms of its usefulness.

Well, sort of, yes. There will be Third Edition retreatments of the major
magic and toy sourcebooks, making the old ones obsolete. How much of it's
"combining" as opposed to "rewriting" hasn't been made known to us
yet,
but it does sound as if Magic in the Shadows is going to be quite
different from the older books.

Magic in the Shadows is theoretically due out in January. I would expect
Man and Machine (cyber and biotech) and the Cannon Companion (weapons and
toys) by sometime around the middle of next year. The Corporate Download
will be somewhere in the middle of all that. That's based solely on the
fuzzy statements FASA and its people have made.. Keep in mind that they
also said the Third Edition GM Screen and the Renraku Arcology book would
be on sale in September, and at this point (mid-October) there's no idea
when they'll even ship.

Will it be a waste of your money to buy the old books? Depends on how
satisfied you are with the stuff in SR3.. As you and your group are
presumably new to Shadowrun, you can probably get along for a long time
with the spells and gear out of the main rulebook, plus your imagination.
Everything truly important is in there somewhere. >8->

There should not be any thing unique to those old books, afaik. More
importantly, all the old stuff will be made SR3 compatible (which might
invalidate a tiny fraction, but due to better replacements). I'd say you
should not bother; the game is quite playable with just SR3; enjoy the
simplicity while you can! The new books will be different enough that you
might make trouble for yourself by learning two sets of rules.
Mits should be out this winter (February), and Man and Machine and the
Cannon Companion next summer- MaM first. June and July? By Gencon, at
the latest!

MiTS is supposed to be out in stores by sometime in February of 1999, or so we
are all hoping for. As for what will be in MiTS, it is supposed to be a
compilation of all of the magic books (Grimoire, Awakenings, and others),
which pertain to magic. Shortly after that there is supposed to be another
sourcebook which covers the magical nations of the world (Target : Awakened
Nations, perhaps).
