After reading Shadowplay - I doubt that the Barret is like the Sniper rifles in
ShadowRun. In shadowplay - they mention the barret, and they mention that it
does more damage then a normal sniper rifle.

I suggest
16 D vehicular damage.

the point is, is that the barret I believe is a gun mage to shoot
vehicles - not people.

Normal sniper rifles shoot people.

I agree. If you look at the picture of the Ranger Arms SM3(?)
it's not much bigger than the standard assault rifle.
A Barret, however, is much larger.
I believe the Cobra Assault cannon from Robocop is built on a Barret.
It's the same gun used by 'God' in Navy SEALS. Take a closer look if
you want to see how big the things really are. Concealability?

A Barrett should clearly have vehicular damage; .50 cals today do
interesting things to vehicles. However, it should not be a
superweapon; scale it to the damage other vehicular weapons do. I
suggest making it equivalent to a heavy machine gun, because a .50 cal
*is* a heavy machine gun.

From what I've read, Barretts are most definetly anti-personel
weapons. .50 cal rounds have really quite good ballistic properties, a
nice range, and an unparalleled lethality.

Actually I think that the Barret is based
more on the Navy S.E.A.L.S. sniping rifle
than the Robocop Cobra. The cobra just
annihilates anything it hits (ED-209's head)
while both the Barret and the Seals rifle
only put a rather large hole into what they
hit. God (the sniper) hit the guy behind
the wall leaving a large hole in the wall.
Its what I'd expect to see if a Barret tried to.
As for the size, having a 5' - 6' gun is pretty
unconcealable to me. And the Seals gun was .50 cal.

Vice versa, friend.

A friend of mine, who left the Marines as a scout sniper a few
months ago, used a few different sniper rifles during his
enlistment. The Barret .50 was among these. Most of the
things he did, and some of the equipment that he used, he
can't talk about (disadvantage of a Top Secret clearance).

Anyway, I asked him specifically about that scene in Navy Seals mentioned
above. He just smiled and said "Ask me again in five years."

And to those who doubt, ball .50 ammo is *extemely* dangerous on it's
own. Make it API-T (Armor Piercing Incendiary with Tracer) and you've
got BIG fun.

I believe in Shadowplay they make mention of the fact that the Barret does
its best damage against armored opponents, because the round heat up when
passing through the armor, hence the fireball effect upon exit! <I always
loved that description in the book...>

The Barret-80 is designed for sniping at light armored vehicles, or the
treads of heavy armor. It is a single action rifle, very large, very heavy.
It fires a special .50 caliber shell: you can't use standard .50 cal ammo
in the Barret-80, simply because the Barret-80 is chambered for a
noticeably longer round.

Now don't go judging all 50 cal rifles by this one example. i've seen
them that are no larger than an m16 so the conceelability could be similar
