Hey all,

I hope someone can help me out with this basic SR3 decking question..I was
running a test matrix run last night to get used to the new rules in SR3
(My last exposure was with SR1), anyway, most of the operations seem to
require utilities, so I was wondering, do all the system operations
REQUIRE the utilities, do you have to use hacking pool to code them "on
the fly" if you dont have them, or do they just reduce the target no.
obviously there are exceptions, for utilites that do a particular thing
(ge blackhammer?), but for general operations (eg longon to RTG requires
deception (no books with me right now)? does this mean you HAVE to have
deception, or you can try without?

cheers all

John

You have my sympathy... Gods, those rules SUCKED. (Actually, the SR1 ones
weren't too bad; VR1/SRII were pretty much works of genius because with only
a few changes they managed to make them much worse, though...)

You don't _need_ utilities at all in most situations: any system operation
requires you to roll Computer skill against the system rating (Access,
Files, etc.) and all the utility does is lower the TN. If you want to log
onto an RTG, for example, you can roll against the base Access rating, and
if you succeed, you're on the RTG. The appropriate utility will make the
test easier, but you can do without if you're good or lucky enough.

no,you cann't use hacking pool to code a utility on
the fly.
Only a semi-autonomous knowbot can do this, but that's
an other story!
