After spending 4 hours watching fantasy movie, I've got one question:
how would one create a "Beastmaster" in SR? I think that'd be an
interesting char concept: a Native American who can take control of
various animals, such as a hawk, a hellhound, or ferrets. There is the
Animal Empathy edge, but not much else that I know of . . .

Here's a simple thought. Create an Adept (Physical Adept in SR2). Give them
the "Animal Empathy", but buy it as "Empathic Sense" so its' a
directly
related Adept ability.

Initiate.

With each level of initiation (grade), buy an additional Metamagic that
functions similarly to the paracritter power "Animal Communication and
Control". In this case, each "Metamagic" gained aquires a new category or
species of animal.

Just a reply.

Hmmm...didn't they have something like this in NAGEE already? Or was
that First Edition? I can't remember...

There's a character concept like this in NAGEE 4. It was written up by one
Steven Mancini, who, from his address, looks like someone K might know.

However, instead of being a collection of adept powers, this is a
character who devotes priority A and 20 skill points (in SR1/2) to being a
beastmaster, and gets some animal control powers in return.

There were two variations on the theme as I recall. The more direct one was
literally titled a "Beastmaster". There was also a "Shapechanger
Adept" that
existed as well.

Steve Mancini used to play in K's games long before I ever rolled onto the
scene.

Actually, several people on this list might recall Steve Mancini. There was
a list/poster named "Rob Nesius" who was acting as the middle man for Steve's
material and opinions (not always a good place to be btw). Steve's a
super-sharp guy with a super-strong opinion center.

I knew Steve, once upon a time, yes. He was a rock-solid game player with a
versatile mind and scarier sense of timing. He's part of the "Vampires,
Shapers and the 'Token Human' games" I once had (back in first ed, VERY early
second ed).

Yep, that's the stuff. Couldn't remember all that stuff clearly. A bunch of
it I just didn't *want* to remember.

Spells? A "control thoughts" or "influence" spell that (only) worked
on
animals would have a lower drain and be pretty easy to cast (most animals
don't have very high willpower). Tjhere is also the "borrow animal sense"
spell from Awakenings. A sorcery adept with a geas of only casting spells
on animals would be a good Beastmaster.

I think I remember the name Rob Nesius, yeah. No idea how long ago that
was, though.

Is that where the Beastmaster came from, too?

I honestly do not think so. Beastmaster I really think is someone elses'
creation. I know we had a varation in our games, but I don't recall ever
sending our version to Jerry. Not that this would have stopped anyone else
from getting involved of course.

Check out Awakenings ... IIRC, the lesser loa spirits can possess
animals. Not quite the same as the movie but oh well. Also, you can use
Ally spirits to simulate the effects the same thing. In either case, you
can make the character a summonig adept or a full mage who specializes in
animal spells (Animal Spy, Heal Animal, etc...)
