Australia is sort of a little bigger than the Netherlands, isn't it? :) For
me, 80 km is pretty far seeing that the only transport I have is a bicycle
(yes, and the train and bus, but those costs money... :)
But my main gripe with all this is that the only game shops around are in
the big cities :(

You've got a bike? Lucky person.
As for the only game shops around... well, there is one here, but the stock
is mainly focused on **&*, and comics (which is it's stock-in-trade). The
nearest FULL gamestore is in Melbourne. You get used to doing mail-order
deals a lot.

Hoi, Gurth. Do you go to that shop in Amsterdam (it's the only games shop
apart from one in Liege that I could find when I lived in Holland (Maastricht)
I think that it is somewhere past the nightclub IT. Sorry I'm being very
vague but I don't have the address anymore.

I live in the country, 11 miles from the nearest town, (800 people on a
good day, usually 300 in the winter time), our 'city' has around 10,000
people and is about and hour to get to. Yes it has a gaming shop.
Unfortunately the nesest materials are at least 3 years old. The owner
dosen't want anything that might
not be popular so he waits to see how other shops are doing for a couple of
years before ordering :(
Gamers here are expected to travel up to +50 miles one way for an
afternoon of gaming...Some gamers that game infrequently travel up to 90
miles one way, others live closer and it's only 25 or 30 miles.(again one way)
I've beeen hoping to run into SR gamers that game on IRC, (as have other
people up here!!! ) So far I've never run into anyone who has actually done
this. Lots of stories about knowing a friend who....Never anyone who has.
Anyone who has? I'd sure like to talk to you. Please e-mail me I have a
lot of questions about how it's done and modifications, writing a 'bot, etc.
sorry I got so long winded,

I've only been in Amsterdam once, I think, and that was before I got into
RP-ing :) If you've got a bicycle as your main mode of transportation, the
200+ km from here to A'dam is not a distance you'll even consider :)
Dropping out of college has its disadvantages, you know. No more free public
transport for one... Not that that card is worth much these days after the
ministry of education tried to save money on that but ended up spending more :)
I get my RPG stuff by mail order from the UK... I compared prices a bit once
when I was at a convention (my one and only so far :( ), and it turned out
that my regular UK address was cheaper even after including postage...

Well, that's Mid-West America for you (at least, my guess is that that's
where you are :) Am I right?) My situation is that I live in a 1500-people
town (that grows to 10,000+ in summer due to the annual tourist invasion),
in an approximately 400 sq. km peninsula, which is home to around 100,000
people... And NO GAME SHOPS :( As far as I'm aware of, there are about 5
game shops in the entire COUNTRY!

That's still better than over here. I guess.

This really helps build my confidence! I thought the situation was desperate
over here, but I see that it can still get worse :)

As we speak, I'm running a PBEM game (not on IRC, but via email). One part
is going pretty slow, but another is up and running smoothly. Sorry, it's
all full :)

Boy do I know how that is. I've given up playing **&* after extreme
annoyance and disgust with T$R. When I tell someone about role playing
games they ask, is that like **&*? When I begin to explain about games
like Shadowrun and others that I play and the major differences, I notice
their eyes gloss over. After a sigh I reply, "It's like **&*."

What is really bad is people think all role-playing games are just like T$R's
AD$D game and attatch all the negative media hipe they have gotten over gamer
suicides and satan worship...

Well, I'm not Gurth but we moved on a bit since then, there are at
least now six shops that I know of who sell "the better Games". I for
once do get Bug City this weekend (ooh, I'm so happy, all the nice
stuff to throw at my players :). That wasn't possible two years ago.
Ah well, to make this even vaguely relevant to the list :) : If anyone
is having trouble finding shops in the Netherlands E-mail me
privately for a list.

BTW: Add me to the list of condoleances for Nigel. I learned a lot
about the game from his books. Even I could understand how a
bussiness worked by reading Corporate Shadowfiles, and that is no
easy feat.

Martin, the shop I was referring was Compendium Games in Harten Straat and
boy do they have some good stuff (they really hate Games Workshop as well).
I really miss Brand beer. A questio to the list, why do all characters etc in
books and sourcebooks use the dutch greeting of hoi? I you look you can see
it everywhere. My group and I used it because we were in Holland at the time,
why does the literature have it. Also, have you noticed how in the Never Deal
With A Dragon trilogy, 2XS (R.I.P) and (of course) Burning Bright, that there
has been a steady build-up towards the Bug City module? All the books ahd bugs
as baddies. Sato was a spider in NDWAD and the scientists in 2XS were also
bugs. Is this a FASA plot? Are they hinting at what is to come in the books?
Comments please ladies and gentlemen.

That's fun. Because I tear people's misconceptions about **&* apart.

I do believe that I have a reason that FASA has all these bugs and baddies in
their books. Quite simply, there will soon be a fight between the forces of
(Meta) Humanity and the forces of the insect spirits. I for one have never
read BC, and I know that makes me behind the times, but from what I've heard,
It deals with Insect spirits. I'd imagine that there will soon be a book or
module that starts off a war between the insects and the rest of the world.
What do you guys think??

Beats me. Why do they use "drek" which is also a Dutch word? Anyone at FASA
have Dutch connections maybe? :)

Yes, and it's also a Russian word that means "shit" Methinks
that that was probably FASA's original source for the word considering
its use.

I think it was called Labarynth(sp). I've never heard from anyone I've
ever talked to about role playing games or who have played that they or
someone they knew had a character take over their life. It's possible to
happen, not from role playing being a negative influence but because they
were mentally unstable in the first place. Down here in Florida we had
an ex-cop who claimed he was James Bond and shot at people from his balcony.

May I hazard a guess? most of this is directly from Neuromancer by
Gibson. Gibson came out before Shadow Run. A lot of the terms are directly
from Gibson.

It also means that in Dutch... Maybe you've forgotten, but Dutch and German
