A misprint?
Freedom Arms made a single-action revolver in .454 Casull, which was
suppose to be the most powerful production hand gun.
There was a gunsmith that converted Rugers 'Bisley' frame
single-action revolver chambered for .475 Linebaugh. I read an
account of an african farmer who dropped a elephant with a single
shot to the head. The Farmer was not hunting, he was investgating a
noice in his garden, what he found was drunken elephant more the a
little irritated at the interuption.
Hamilton Bowen (a gunsmith) bulids a custom pistol chambered for .500
Maximum on a Rugar frame. It was capable of projecting a 450 grain
bullet at 1500 feet per second. For a reference the .45 ACP fires a
230 grain FMJ at about 850-900 fps,
All of the above pistols are 5-shot single-action revolvers. And all,
execpt the .454 Casull, shoot custom made handloaded ammuntion, usind
custom cast bullets. You do not go in to the local gunshop or
sporting goods store and buy this ammuntion. A single-action
revelover must be manualy cocked (hammer pulled back) before each
shot. This is incontrast to a Double-action revolver, where a single
triger pull cocks the hammer and fires the pistol. Most double-action
revolvers can be frired single-action. Some people belive (I am one)
that because of its short crisp trigger pull, single-action is more
accurate mode of firing.
While on the discussion of big bore hand guns (or is it hand cannon
:) ) here are three more:
Dan Wesson ,455 Super Magnum, 5 shot single-action revolver
11mm Wildey Magnum, Auto pistol (necked down .475 Winchester Magnum
case)
Then there is the Sinle action revolver chambered for 45-70 smokeless
(a variation of rifle cartridge orignally developed for the
Springfield Trap-Door Rifles and Carbines, some of which were used
at the Little Big Horn)
For those who are interested I have done SR stats for a couple of
pistols modeled on these and the Desert Eagle Pistols If ther is
intrest I can post them and the special rules that go with them.
