On the other hand, I've read (mind you: read) of soldiers wearing body
armor, who didn't even notice that they had been hit. After the fight,
they discovered a deformed bullet somewhere in the armor.

Those who don't know that the heavy armor is there. Like, for instance,
shooting your SMG at a helicopter, and hitting a crewmember. THose crews
often wear real heavy armor (stops .50 calibre rounds :+)).

Ahh, hydrodynamic shock.... (waves rushing through from the impact -
light-willed individuals go into shock quickly)

Ever hear of "Endorphins"? They do alot for reducing the pain of damage
to negligable.
