Subject: Bio/Cyberware question in RA:S
Date: Mon, 6 Sep 1999 20:34:43 -0700 (PDT)
I'll be running in the Arc anytime soon but except for
VR2 and Rigger 2 I don't own any other SR2 book, so I
have some questions about some cyber/bioware found in
RA:S.
I'd like to know what they are and what they do :

Softlink
Cerebral Booster
Synaptic Accelerator
Tracheal Filter
Math SPU
Encephalon
Enhanced Articulation
and what are Ratings on a Datajack

Tanx

I was going to post the descriptions, straight out of Shadowtech, but then I
realized that the States' copyright laws exist for a reason. Buy the book.
First of all, it's worth it, second of all, hey, let's support the people
that give us all this fun stuff to play with.

Now, anyone else could post the same thing I was going to, but I hope no one
will. Let's support FASA's copyright laws on this one, folks.

[See, I'm not always mean.]

Well, there are two problems with this. First, I doubt he could 'Buy the
book' Have you tried finding Shadowtech lately, it being a 1st edition
book. Near impossible, though not quite as hard as finding something like
Universal Brotherhood. Second...umm, not sure what the second one was...oh
yeah, most of it is going to change when Man and machine comes out, which
as I remember, will be sometime near the end of Sept. Since it will then
become irrelevant, or at least changed, I will post the following basic
descriptions of the above listed bio/cyberware

And then I realized I can't find my own copy of Shadowtech!! Gah! So, the
following descriptions are from memory, and may be wrong

Cerebral Booster (bioware) Increases intelligence, and higher levels give a
'task pool' for knowledge/mental skills

Synaptic Accelerator (bio) Increases initiative (1d6 per level, I think)

Tracheal Filter Protects against gasses

Math SPU (cyber) Useful for deckers, can't remember exact function

Encephalon (cyber) Like a cerebral booster, sort of, but cyberware

Enhanced Articulation (bio) Increases reaction by 1 and one extra dice for
athletics...smoothens and slickens joints with teflon, sort of

and what are Ratings on a Datajack can't recall off hand

Remember folks, before you say 'buy the book' that is oft impossible for
very old SR stuff

Its' an implant that allows for more than one skillsoft chip to be accessed
at a single time.

Piece of Bioware that augments the persons intelligence.

Piece of Bioware that augments the persons reflexes (Initiative).

Piece of Bioware that helps protect the user against certain airborne crap...

Think of this as a cybernetic super-calculator...

Think of this as having a computer in your head, sort of. Its' really hard
to explain because it is a really complex piece of 'ware.

> > Enhanced Articulation

Something that does exactly what it says it does, makes the person more
"articulate" (aka: flexible).

> > and what are Ratings on a Datajack

Numbers that give a definition or method of comparing the functional level
between datajacks. Think of the numbers as ways to say "x" amount of
information per turn can be transferred.

This is true, but it would be nicer to give him some clues without any
rules...which is what I think I'm doing (see above)...Personally, I would
have suggested to this nice gentleman to wait for Man & Machine to come out,
as it will update all the cyberware and bioware rules (and probably some
other stuff as well).

Oh yeah, go ahead and destroy our growing mental image of you... ;-P

That's a multi-slot chipjack.

Adds rating to intellegence, may give extra dice for tech + knowledge
tests (1 die pool if rating 2)

Adds rating to intiaive dice

Subtracts 1/2 (?) level from inhaled toxin power.

Adds 1/2 rating to comp skill, may affect hacking pool (forget just how).

Adds 1/2 rating to int (roun d down) and pool as C booster (rating -1

Adds +1 reaction and +1 die to almost all combat and physical skills (and

Pointless...

No problem, biut these are prone to change when MaM comes out. I'd buy
MaM instead of Shadowtechnolgy- it will describe the new versions of all
the above products that are still valid in SR3.

And this is all that I asked for!

According to Jeff, at 20:34 on 6 Sep 99, the word on
the street was...

> Softlink

An updated version of the chipjack; it has a rating that indicates how
many chips can be plugged into it at any one time. (E.g. a softlink-2 can
handle two chips; highest rating is 4.)

> Cerebral Booster

Bioware that enhanced cognitive abilities etc. In game terms, it adds its
level (max. 2) to Intelligence.

> Synaptic Accelerator

Bioware that gives +1D6 initiative per level (max. 2) and, at level 1, is
cumulative with move by wire...

> Tracheal Filter

A bioware filter in the throat to get rid of airborne particles.

> Math SPU

A chip that increases your Math skill by its level (max. 4).

> Encephalon

A sophisticated computer that adds half its level (max. 4) to your
Intelligence and gives you the ability to use skillsofts without the need
for a knowsoft link.

> Enhanced Articulation

Bioware that puts a Teflon-like coating on the joints in your skeleton,
giving one extra die for active skills as well as +1 Reaction.

> and what are Ratings on a Datajack

They indicate the data flow rate (DFR) of the datajack: the higher the
rating, the more megapulses can go through the datajack per turn. It has
hardly any real game effect, though.

Check ebay out. I'm often surprised at how much role-playing stuff gets
out there. There are two Shadowtech books there right now, but both of them
are more expensive than I'd usually by SR books at.
