Subject: Bioware and Cyberware Question

Hello again, it's time for another odd rules question. I've been working on
a character for a PBeM game and am having a minor difference of opinion with
the GM. He suggested that I ask the list, so here goes. :-)

When you implant bio and cyber in the same (magically active) character, do
you combine the bio and cyber reductions for determining the magic rating, or
do they come out of different points. Perhaps an example will help, as that
doesn't look too clear to me.

A mage has 0.6 essence worth of cyberware implanted. He also carries 0.4
points of bioware (for effective magic rating reduction). Now, is his magic
rating 5 (combined) or 4 (different points)?

Any help or opinions are welcome.

We had this discussion awhile back. The consensus was 4, as bio and cyber
are different. It works for gamebalance, also.

I could be wrong, but I always thought that any Essence loss was counted the
same, and that, for your example, the Magic rating would be 5.

This is a bit unclear in Man & Machine, but on page 78 it says: "reduce
the Magic Rating by the character's Bio Index and round down to the
nearest whole number." Therefore, in your example:

the mage's actual Magic rating is 5, and his virtual Magic rating is 4.
First the 0.6 points of Essence loss reduce the Magic rating to the
Essence of 5.4, rounded down to make it 5. Then, the Bio Index of 0.4
lowers the Magic rating directly -- not by going through Essence first --
to 4.6, which rounds to 4.

In SR2 (which I'm not completely sure on but it wouldn't be the first time I
screw up) says that you deduct the Bio Index cost from bioware from your
essence if you are magicly active. This led to problems - like how it
becomes easier to cast heal on a mundane with bioware than on a magican with
the same bioware. So in SR3 the ruling became that you deduct lost points
from your essence and bio index from your magic attribute, seperatly.

So SR2, the guy has magic 5. SR3 the guy has 4.

Phil

That's it; get out of my castle!

Almost right. It was in Shadowtech, and it said that bioware cost Essence
equal to its Body Cost (renamed Bio Index in M&M) for the magically-
active. But yeah, basically you were right :)

_Much_ easier, because half the character's Body Index was added to the
TN, so magicians were doubly screwed in this respect.
