One sec, chummers. Read up on the bioware chapter of ShadowTech. In the intro
section to bioware, (I don't have the book in front of me, so I can't give a
page and paragraph) some of the things that are said are: 1) Bioware doesn't
drop your Body attribute--the Body att. only limits the amount of bioware you
can get (GMs might want to have it drop body for game balance); 2) For
magically active characters, bioware reduces Essence by the Body cost
number in the listing (make that the body index). That's what ShadowTech
says.
The way we play it in our group is that bioware reduces Body
rating, but does not reduce Essence. That way mages can get Synaptic
Accelerators to increase their speed without harming their magic. Of course,
we (the players()s) think that also our GM might not have read that part,
so we're not going to blurt too much out so he doesn't change our characters
that we're running now. But the new characters I'm writing up are using the
rules in ShadowTech.

That's enough for now I believe. See you all around.

If I was your GM I wouldn't allow mages bioware even without the Shadowtech
rule, IMHO mages have enough advantages without bioware. There is game balance
to think of, and mages come close enough to breaking the balance.

There's IMHO another reason : magic is inherently linked to the spirit. By
removing parts of the natural body and inserting new tech ( either cyber- or
bio- ), you ( forgive the neo-philosophical speech ) "disrupt the link between
the spirit and the body. In essence, you spirit/life force/soul/whatever becomes
less attuned to your body, which makes mana molding more difficult. Thus the
essence loss. Of course, those who are mundane are unaffected...
